Unscrew all the screws and pull the top of the panel away from the glass. then reach down and pull the latch mechanism that the handle normally does. that what i had to do. its a little tough but it saves the panel. just remove the panel till you get it fixed.

The clip that goes on the control rod that goes between the part you pull and the latch itself has likely come apart (bad design) Destructive but effective is to cut the panel behind the lock on the inside, grab the rod and pull it. You can get another panel cheap in any scrapyard.
There is a more complicated way, drilling a hole exactly opposite the lock key hole in the drivers side of the latch assembly but then you need to get the latch out which can be a bit difficult. There is only one bolt holding the assembly in (where you drill the hole) but the assembly tends to hang up coming out. Whenever I do this I replace the bolt I drilled with a tulip screw countersunk into the plastic cover. (use 1/4" bit for actual hole.)
Generally using a small tie wrap will keep the rod that fell off secure.

94 Grand Cherokee. I knew the best way to do it was to gain access, of coarse. started with a little hole to try and trip the catch with a pick from the inside. Don't waste your time. You need to pull up on the linkage arm it's the only way. But I started seeking out others opinions, which I value yet realize that what works for one doesn't work for all. so I spent way to much time trying to find and remove hidden screws that were inaccessible anyhow. Thank you for bringing me back to the job at hand which was to get the gate open.I used a dremel and cut a 4" x 6" square out of the panel above the latch inside.I reached in pulled up on the linkage and pushed door open. I will eventually replace the panel but until then I used a plastic welder, (very reasonably priced at harbor freight) and mended my cut out re-glued the carpet. I'll probably forget it's even there. you need to get in there and if you can't bare the brutal reality of breaking eggs to make omelets, see if a competent friend will. A shop gonna hurt your wallet for sure.

Try hit it right below the latch while pulling on it it will open, or remove the covers, check and clean the system: ZJ-Secc-8P-Power-Door-Locks about Door Locks.
Good luck!!!

i just fixed the liftgate on my 1998 JGC Laredo this afternoon: door handle, when lifted, does not release latch mechanism
here is a solution that may apply to you...
1. open liftgate flipper window
2. remove door panel screws from inside
3. use coat hanger to pull up on locking mechanism arm (at the bottom) to release latch mechanism
4. with door now open, remove remaining door panel screws to completely remove door panel
5. adjust the positioning of the latch rod in its retaining clip (open clip and reposition rod)
in my case, I had took much slack and repositioned the rod by a few threads (about 1/8th inch) in the clip.
be sure rod is seated fully in the clip and that the clip is securely closed
5. test your fix before re-assembling everything
want a long, detailed version? let me know.

It just won't open. It is unlocked but the liftgate won't release and let me open it. I have heard other jeep owners have had this problem but don't know how to fix it. I am hoping there is a mechanical way I can release it and open it so I can replace a rear turn signal bulb. I can't get to the screws without opening back hatch.
why not?
