I dont really think the HDD change matters.the fault might be from the game you are playing,probably the disc or something.please give a more vivid description of what happens.and the game you are playing too.

check the cable connections, if that fails it could be it's on it's way to YLoDing. What version is it? Early launch 60 gig models do YLoD if used on HDMI after a couple of years but are fine on SD. 40/80 gig ones do pretty much the same except they don't reflow very well.
Unfortunetly the HDD's can't be swapped like that. The only way to get the old stuff is to some how get the 40gb working so you can back up your system. Tell me what happend to the 40 and I might be able to help you get it up long enough to back it up so you can get all your stuff transfered. Another way is if you can get the 40gb machine to work the PS3 has a mode to hook a CAT5 cable from the new to the old and transfer that way.
A little more on the HDD swap. The HDD's are machine spacific and can only be recognized by the machine they were in and any other PS3 you try to put them in won't recognize the device without a format will saddly enough wipe the drive clean.

Blow out PS3 thoughly with air and make sure it can breathe. They do not do well in entertainment centers. They overheat. Which one do you have the smaller one or the bigger HD one. The 40 gig one has a different videocard that likes to overheat and freak out a lot. (If you dont have a card reader but you have a 80 gig HD then thats the "new" small one, and its junk too. Send back to Sony if you need it fixed).
No, the 40 gig doesn't come with backwards compatibility like the 60 or 80 gig one does. Unfortunately the only way to play them is to get one of the other versions. Although, there are rumors circulating that Sony might release a patch that allows it.
if u play for the PS3 like save ur game and turn it off evey like 1 one hour for like 10 minutes especially the 40 gig if this dosent work buy a fan for it its at gamestop for like $45-$85
As far as i know if it is a 20 or 60 gig it is just playstation 20 or 60 gigabites. I have heard that the 40 and 80 gig models have been refered to as 2.0. So it would be playststion 3 80 2.0
