My four year old Epson prints blue (and black ?) only. All ink levels are 40-50%. Repeated nozzle cleanings don't help. Will investing in new cartridges help ? Or is it time for a new machine ? Are you allowed to recommend makes and models ?

Simple problem that print head cleaning will typically not fix. The black ink is pigment based so it tends to form more stubborn clogs. Just remove the print head and if you have a steamer hit the black printhead nozzles with some pressured steam. If not available, soak the surface of the printhead in shallow hot water (try not to get the contact wet or be sure to dry them if you do). You can tell if the printhead nozzles are open by folding a section of wet paper towel like 5-10 layers and then soak it, press the printhead surface up and down lightly on the wet paper towel and if the nozzles are open you will see some ink pulse in the black port screen (the colors will also pulse from the pressure of the liquid under the printhead). It's easier than it sounds so give it a try. I've saved 100s of Canon printheads this way.
Note: if you have a really dried out head, you sometimes have to soak from the top inlet ports and the bottom nozzle surface to clear, but unlikely in you case since you had a black cartridge installed with ink in it (this keeps the top port from drying).
The print head nozzles may be clogged. From the Utility section found in the EPSON printer driver, clean the print heads by performing a head cleaning followed by printing a nozzle check pattern. A head cleaning and nozzle check must be performed as a cycle. After printing a nozzle check, examine the printed dot pattern. Each staggered horizontal and straight vertical line should be complete, with no gaps in the dot pattern. If there are gaps in the dot pattern, continue with another cycle. Perform up to 3 cycles if necessary. If the nozzle check is not printing completely, and if the head cleanings do not help the nozzle check pattern to print completely, try replacing the ink cartridge. Any ink cartridge installed into the printer must have a blue label on top of it. If the blue label has been removed from the ink cartridge, do not install the cartridge. Using an ink cartridge, which does not have the blue label on it, may damage the printer. Caution: If you have already installed a cartridge which is missing the blue label, or if a previously installed ink cartridge was missing its blue label at the time it was installed, and now head cleanings do not help the nozzle check pattern to print completely, your printer may require service and you should contact the EPSON Connection for further assistance.

This should be the problem of print head ink nozzle block.The nozzle for the black ink cartridge got dry.So the ink getsdried state.It won't allow any inks passing through the micro nozzles.Head cleaning won't help with the heavy nozzle block.So try replacing a new black cartridge or else bring the printer to the nearest service center.It'll help so.
There is nothing wrong with the black ink. Just run the head cleaning for better printing.
1. Go to printer and faxes 2. Right click your printer ( Epson Stylus Multifunction Printer/ Copier/ Scanner InkJet) 3. Click printing preferences 4. Click Maintenance Tab 5. Click Head Cleaning 6. Run head cleaning for 5 times then try printing.
You should be able to see nozzle check, click it and follow the prompt.
Line patterns that corresponds to the colors of the ink cartridges
would be printed. If breaks on the patterns appear, continue with head cleaning. Try to do this about 3 times until
all patterns are complete.
-Clean the electrical contacts on the printer where the cartridge connects with alcohol. After it dries clean the same contacts with a regular pink, non-abrasive pencil eraser making sure you remove all the debris when done.
-Its also possible there is an air bubble preventing the flow of ink. You can try inserting a full cartridge of ink in the printer and letting it sit overnight then running a nozzle clean job or two. Another alternative if you have a syringe you may want to try gently forcing ink into it. If you?re really desperate you can try drilling a small hole into the cartridge to give gravity feeding a hand. BE WARNED the air hole will let ink flow pretty well and you run the chance of making a mess. Before you pull the cartridge out of the printer make sure you cover the hole with tape so the ink doesn?t make even more mess.
-Check the cartridge alignment making sure the contacts are mating to the printer.
-If it still doesn?t work I would try cleaning your nozzles. Even though I doubt you have clogged nozzles its worth a try because of the following:
If you search the Internet you?ll find that this specific model is know for failing to print some or all colors after about 1 ½ to 2 years of use, even with Epson inks. Most of the posts I?ve seen blame it on clogged nozzles but I suspect a good number of them, like yours, have another explanation for their failure. Ink jet printers use resistors to create heat to create a bubble in the ink to eject it out of the nozzle (Bubble jet) or in the case of Epson, vibrating crystals push ink into and out of the nozzles (piezoelectric).
We?ve already cleaned the electrical contacts and cleaned the nozzles so what remain are defective nozzles, short between the nozzle and the controller board or a defective controller board. Since the printer is only worth 1 or 2 hundred dollars repairs at a shop or buying these repair parts can easily exceed ½ its cost.
