Question about Video Cameras

2 Answers

The computer cannot find the Camcorder no matter what I try.

I've recently acquired a Canon MV930 and I've been using it to record a really important project for school. I've got what I need and all I have to do is upload the video to my computer for editing, but no matter what I try the computer doesn't want to detect the camcorder.

I'm using a 6-pin Firewire cord to connect the camera to the system and I'm using Windows XP. This is the first time I'm using any sort of firewire cord and the USB cord doesn't work either.

I've tried installing several drivers, rebooting the system doesn't work and I'm running out of options and ideas. Please help me! I'm getting desperate.

Have the same issue with a sony. Use to be able to do it, now can't and have tried 3 different pcs. Cable OK as it regonised digital camera. Am thinking it must be some internal componentry of the camcorder?

Do you have iMovie? On mine, with any camcorder I've had, when I have iMovie running and plug the camcorder in it automatically changes to the Record mode. Click on the forward button and it will start the camcorder. Press the Record button when you get to the part you want to record. You can then edit the beginning or end of the section to use the portion(s) you want. The software controls the camcorder to go frontwards or backwards. Works very slick. Not sure what to suggest if you don't use iMovie.

Perhaps the microphone was muted while you were making the original recording? Have you tried playing back a new recording with the microphone active?

I've lost the installation disc and want to transfer mini dv films from my canon mv930 to my computer

According to page 80 of the user manual for this camera (click here for manual), the installation disk will not help you with transferring movies from your camera to your computer.

The instructions state that you will need a computer with a 4 or 6 pin DV (firewire) interface adapter, a 4 to 4 pin or 4 to 6 pin DV interface cable, and the movie software that came with your computer. According to the user manual, drivers for this DV interface are built-in to Windows 98 and later versions of Windows.

Assuming you have a Windows computer, I would suggest using Windows Movie Maker to import and edit your movies from your camera. If you have a Mac, then iMovie will be able to handle this very nicely.

The 4 to 4 DV interface cable is available here: (click here)

The 4 to 6 DV interface cable is available here: (click here)

Your computer will have to have a 4 or 6 pin firewire adapter either built-in to it or provided by an add-on card of some sort.

If you provide the make, model number, and operating system of your computer, I may be able to suggest some sources for the firewire adapter if available.

Thanks for using FixYa. If this solution was helpful, please choose either 3 or 4 thumbs-up to show that it helped you.

Can you please tell me why when i try to import vidoes using picture motion browsing i am getting the message Cannot find source media for importing,

You might be connecting the Camcorder using USB interface. Picture Motion Browser Cannot be used for transferring videos from tape camcorder (mini DV in your case) using USB interface..

Operating System also matters..

If you're using XP OS, you can install the driver from supplied CD and use Windows Movie Maker to transfer the recordings using USB interface.

Vista, Windows 7 - You need to use i.LINK or A/V interface to transfer the recording. When using i.LINK with Vista, you can use the Picture Motion Browser software.

I think this will definitely help you to connect the Camcorder..

Sony DCR DVD108 not finalizing disc, lost data

I noticed that too with my "VR" (and NOT "Video") formatted disks. I don't think you can finalize the VR ones. Instead you have to use the Sony Import tool to grab the videos. If you are like me you probably remember using the import tool with Video formatted disks BEFORE finalizing them and it takes forever to copy them. They must be finalized to view on other devices, copy using the import tool quicker, etc., but VR formatted disks seem optimized for importing (and can be edited on the camcorder directly.

Hi,
make sure you are using 4 pin to 4pin firewire which looks like this:

After connecting,
Switch on the Cam.
Open Windows Movie Maker and import video from device.

Playing DV footage that was recorded on a different camera

Canon camcorders have a non-standard head position. Borrow a panasonic or samsung camcorder (those two are compatible) and backup your casettes on dvds. If you want them to be on minidv readable on canon camcorder, connect it afterwards and send video to minidv through your camcorder. It will then be alligned the way that suites your gear.

Either that or go to the professional service that does conversion from minidv tapes. That usually costs around 15$ per hour, so if you have 10 or more hours of video, the less expensive way is buying an entry model of panasonic camcorder.
