Do a Get Info on you hard drive (can just Control Click it and choose Get Info).
Unlock using the Lock Icon at bottom right.
Click the + (plus) bottom left.
Add yourself.
Change the Privilege to 'Read & Write'
Click the gear at the bottom
Choose 'Apply to enclosed Items'
Choose OK when it asks if you really want to do that.

Will run for a few minutes.

If that did not work, use the Disk Utility in the Utilities Menu, near the bottom of Applications.
From there, choose to Repair Permissions on the First Aid tab.

Repair Permissions won't change anything if the Mac thinks you can only Read files, so you have to do the first step above either way.

All the best to you,
Kerry

Downloading on mac A1181

Molly As it says the file needs an application to open it, what type of suffix does it have on it by this I mean does it have either .zip, .jpg, .doc, .exe or something else on the end of it. This would identify what application you need to open it. Do you know what the file is you are trying to download? If you could tell me what type of file it is I should be able to help you.

I have a macbook pro and my exboyfriend was an admin user on my laptop, and it was password protected,i dont know what i did but i ended up rebooting the whole thing and everything was gone.and now it made...

I'm not an expert MAC user but I know how ADMINS THINK, first I would try politely asking for help from your EX, or (if your at war with him), than I would try taking out the drive and put it in an other computer (a LINUX computer) than I would try to mount the drive and recover what ever you need to recover (personal files etc...) than re-install the drive in the MAC computer and RE-INSTALL the OS from scrach, than copy your fils back in the newly installed MAC... who nows... maybe he put a rootkit or something to hack you later... (even if your EX cooperates I would still, after recovering your files, re-install everything) just to be sure...

If the drive's data is encrypted than you lost everything X boyfriend and X files...

Good luck!

I've been getting pop-up windows that say I am prevented from opening or changing documents/files due to lack of authorization or permission. I am the owner of and only person using this computer. How can...

I am not sure if the documents or files that you are opening or changing are from attachments sent to you via email or not, but I can suggest that you can try this step:

Right click on one of the affected files and select Get Info.

This will open a long narrow box providing detailed information of the document.

Now look at the bottom of the window under Sharing & Permissions

Click the padlock and enter your User Admin password when the pop up window appears.

This will allow you access to changing the current permissions of this document.

Make sure you see permissions for "Read and Write" attached to your user name.

If you do, then go ahead and close this window. However, if you see only Read permissions attached to your user, then change that to Read and Write.

Once you have done this, close this Get Info window.

Try to launch that affect document to see if it opens now. If it does then this may be a permissions issue that is affecting your documents and files.

Whether you can or not, I would still recommend you still run this procedure below in order to try and fix this permissions issue.

Now run Disk Utility to repair all permissions on your Mac OS X volume.

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} -RUN DISK UTILITY-

Go to Finder Menu bar
• Click Go > Utilities > Disk Utility and open up Disk Utility app.
• Click on Macintosh HD volume (or on the name you have changed this volume to.)
• Select "Repair Disk Permissions"
**Let Disk Utilities run this repair permissions until completion

Once Disk Utility is complete and there are no errors in red in the completion summary (if there are errors listed in red, re-run Disk Utility to see if those error will clear- if they don't reply back to this post right away and let me know what the exact error message is), quit Disk Utility.

• Now attempt once again to access the affected documents and files and see if you are able to access these items now.

I hope this helps.

Regards,

-Mactechtrainer

When i click on my JPEG pics they wont open

such jpg files need the original software when they were modified into a jpg format. like an adobe jpg or a corel draw jpg wont open in paint until the respective software is installed.
secondly jpg file has a header file and check sum , if the header file is missing or destroyed by a virus or already there is a virus on ones system the jpg files have to be isolated and treated for antivirus which reapirs the file and seperates the virus from the header maintaining the integrity of the file.try to isolate one jpg file and run a scan for virus on another computer, if the file gets repaired use the antivirus to repair your files

Worm/script corrupted software. all is lost?

Hey there, I am not sure as to what program you are having trouble with, or what trouble exactly you are having. As far as trying to retrieve data you can always use recuva. Just copy and paste since the hyperlink tool does not seem to be working

http://www.filehippo.com/download_recuva/download/789d9f571d086e9785d7632fedd77f68/

That program will allow you to go in and retrieve any files as is. As far as any corrupted files, If you let me know the program and the errors or eve the corrupted files I may be able to help you further. Let me know

10657 error code

I got the solution to this problem at the Genius Bar.
As they explained it, Time Machine is software that saves files on the backup drive in a format that can only be read by Time Machine. So, when you open Time Machine, you can click on any file and it will open.
If you try to open a file directly from the backup drive, it needs a program to open it, and if Time Machine is not open, you get the error message.

If your computer crashes, when you get it fixed (or get a new Mac)and when you connect the backup drive, Time Machine will recognize it, will ask you if you want to associate it with your computer, and when you say yes, all your backed-up files are availabel and copied back into the computer.
Genius Bar:

Click on this link. Or copy and paste it into your browser.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know.
If this solves your issue, please be kind to rate it.

cause it has compatibility issue. But by this time its your hardware. Try downloading other version which is nearer to your older version. Be sure to complete the zip file before you expand it or else it prompts you again the same error code.
