Question about HP Pavilion s7310n (EN996AA) PC Desktop

IDE Connector Does anybody know anything about this connector? I am looking for IDE cable and/or adapter. On Sep 17, 2007 PcExpert answered a question about this connector here and posted a picture of a diffrent motherboard (looks like Asus) with the same connector. Any idea what was the motherboard model?

What do you need to know IDE?,An IDE connector is that all computer use get connection with the device like hard drive and disc drive.These ports are available even in very old motherborads (upto 2 ports).Need more help?

    IDE has one type of cable.A thin about 3cm long (what you have on the picture) .These cables available in most computer shops (Where they sell used computers).

Skimatice for hard drive connections


Schematic

The eMachines T6532 uses an MSI MS-7207 motherboard.
Also known as the KN8GM2-L,

The MSI motherboard has provisions for using, EITHER an
IDE (PATA) harddrive, or a SATA harddrive. (Or more than one)

Two different technologies.
I will explain both, using an IDE (PATA) harddrive,
OR;
Using a SATA harddrive;

On the MSI Support page above, click on the Download tab.
(Overview / Specifications / Download / Support / etc)

In the drop down list click on - Manual

Language > English > 7.1MB > E7207v2.0.zip
Click on the blue E7207v2.0.zip

On the next page click on the country name nearest yours.
A small window will come up -
Opening E7207v2.0.zip

Make SURE there is a Green dot in the small circle, to the left of Save File.
IF not; Left-click in the small circle to the left of Save File.
Now go below in the small window, and click on OK

A small download window will come up. Allow the file to download ALL the way, then DOUBLE-click right on it.

In the next small window go to the far left, and click on -
Extract all files.

At the bottom of the next 3 small windows, click on -
Next, Next, and Finish.

In the last small window DOUBLE-click right on the file name.

There is the Motherboard Manual

The MS-7207 has two IDE slots;

IDE 1, which is Yellow in color, and close to the outside edge of the motherboard.
Should have IDE 1 silkscreened on the motherboard, below it.

IDE 2 is Yellow in color also, and right next to IDE 1.

(IDE 2 is in-between IDE 1 and the Ram Memory slots.
The Purple, Slot 4, ram memory slot to be specific. {DIMM 4 )

IDE 1 is used for an IDE harddrive.
IDE 2 is used for an IDE optical drive.

TWO IDE harddrives can be put on a single flat ribbon IDE cable,

NOTE that there are two styles of IDE flat ribbon cables;
40-wire cable,
OR;
80-wire cable.

BOTH have 40 socket holes in their connectors.
(ONLY 39 are used, so one hole May, or May Not be blocked off)

An IDE cable usually has a Locating Lug on it's connectors, in the middle of the connector; and on one side,

Here you see the Locating Lug as being two separate 'ridges'.
Some styles the Locating Lug is single block.

The motherboard connector has a matching Cutout on one side.
The Locating Lug lines up with the cutout when installing the cable.

The Harddrive, and optical drive (CD/DVD drive), will have a cutout on their circuit boards.

There are 40-pins. (Only 39 are used if so)
One of them is the number 1 pin.
The IDE cables are plugged into the motherboard, with number 1 pin lining up with number 1 wire, in the IDE cable.

Same when the IDE cable is plugged into a Harddrive, or optical drive.

IF, there is no Locating Lug on the IDE cable;
Look for the faint RED stripe, on the side of the IDE cable.
Number 1 wire is on the same side, as the faint Red stripe.

When plugging into a motherboard, Number 1 pin is on the Bottom.
The faint red stripe on the cable, goes towards the BOTTOM of the motherboard.
(Motherboard installed in computer case)

When plugging into a Harddrive, or optical drive; the faint red stripe ALWAYS goes toward the power cable,

This shows you the Back of an IDE (PATA) harddrive, and the power cable used for it.
If -> No Locating Lug on IDE cable, the faint Red stripe goes towards the power cable.

This is a 4-pin standard Peripheral power cable.
Note when installing the rounded corners ALWAYS goes UP.

[This power cable is frequently, and erroneously; referred to as a 'Molex' power cable.
Molex was just the first manufacturer of the power cable CONNECTOR. Name STUCK.

Kind of like calling an adjustable open-end wrench, a 'Crescent wrench ]

A SATA power cable is used for a SATA harddrive, or SATA optical drive,

There is an L-shape in the SATA power cable's connector.
It matches an L-shape on the Harddrive, or optical drive.

Between a SATA power cable's connector, and a SATA data cable's connector; a SATA power cable connector is the LARGER of the two.
A SATA power cable has 15-contact pins.
A SATA data cable has 7-contact pins.

A SATA power cable's connector may have a LOCK on it.
Usually a Tab, or 'bulb' type affair.
It is pressed down with the thumb when installing, or removing the SATA power cable.

Now you can see the L-shaped opening a little better, that both the SATA data cable have, and the SATA power cable, has.

In the photo the SATA data cable's connector, is a 90 degree bent Elbow.
This style of connector is usually used on the Harddrive, or on the optical drive.

A Straight connector style is usually used for the Motherboard.
However, you can use a SATA data cable, that has a Straight connector on both ends.

Looking at your motherboard, installed in a computer case; there are 2 SATA connectors on the motherboard.

(CAN, be up to FOUR)

I see one motherboard reference where they (2) are Orange in color, (Newegg), and the motherboard manual shows them (2) to be Purple in color.

They are located towards the Bottom/Right corner of the motherboard.
Above the CMOS battery.

The SATA connector that is closest to the Outside edge of the motherboard, is SATA1 (SATA 1)

The Harddrive plugs into SATA 1.

An optical drive that is SATA, will plug into the SATA2 connector.
To the Left of the SATA1 connector.

KNOW THIS;

DOES NOT MATTER, which SATA connector you plug the Harddrive, or optical drive; into.

The beauty of SATA, is that you can plug the Harddrive or optical drive into ANY SATA connector, (On ANY motherboard), and BIOS will find those devices.

BIOS looks FIRST, to see which drive has the Operating System on it. (Windows)
THAT, is the Harddrive.

After finding the drive with the O/S on it, then BIOS will find all the other drives. Removable, or not.

So there you have it. A lot of reading.
You need a power cable, and a data cable to the Harddrive.
Same thing for the optical drive/s.

Replacing DVD/CD drive


Look inside of your tower, you will have a few different cords connecting to your DVD/CD drive.

It should either have a 4 pin Molex connector and an IDE or a Sata connector and power.

The IDE cable looks like this:

IDE is an older tech that uses a 4 pin molex to connect it.

Now, if you have something that looks like this:

It uses Sata, and the power cable looks like it as well, it's just longer.

To make sure the DVD drive you're working will work with the current DVD/CD's you have, just look on the front of the CD you are going to use, in truth it usually should work with anything. It's even RW so you can re-write data to RW CD/DVD types.

Pretty much, just make sure that it uses the same power type and data connector as your current one. Power type being the 4pin molex or the Sata power plug. Data type being the IDE cable or the Sata cable.

If it matches, it will work :) I hope this helps.

Viewing the illustration look at the bottom right.
Primary IDE is where the harddrive plugs in.

In the motherboard photo this is the long Blue connector.

Now lets view an IDE 'ribbon' cable,

Click on the photo to the upper right that shows the IDE cable, and it's blue connector. (The photo on the left of it shows the motherboard connector)

Here you see the rectangular connector, and a small square 'bump' on top.
The bump is a Locating Lug.

This lug is lined up with a cutout, in one side of the motherboard connector.
The other end of the cable's Locating Lug, lines up with a cutout on the back of the harddrive.

IF, there is no Locating Lug on the IDE cable connector;

There is a faint red stripe on one side of the cable. This is Always on the same side as number 1 wire, in the cable.

On the above link scroll the page down towards the middle, and the IDE cable illustration. (Under the heading - Parallel ATA Interface )

Number one contact pin on the harddrive, is ALWAYS towards the power connection, on the harddrive.

The above is for a Western Digital IDE harddrive, and shows the jumper settings.
I posted it for the back view of the harddrive.

Look at the where it states - 40-pin IDE connector.
Now look at the right side where it states - Power connector

When the IDE flat ribbon cable is plugged into the harddrive, the faint red strip faces - Power connector

On the motherboard look at the blue connector stated above.
Looking at it with the optical drive connector above it, (Secondary IDE),
the red stripe goes to the LEFT.

With the IDE cable plugged into the Primary IDE, and the Secondary IDE connector above the Primary IDE connector, the faint red stripe goes to the LEFT.

The plastic front piece of your computer is the Front Panel.

The area of contact pins on the motherboard, that the wires from the Front Panel go to, is the Front Panel header.

I want to install a CD/DVD RW drive. This is in addition to the installed CD/DVD already in place. The new drive has a SATA connection on the back, and the only available connector is an IDE connector....


There are IDE to SATA adapters and cables, such as this one linked below. IDE to SATA Adapter
You would simply plug this adapter into the available IDE connection on your motherboard, then use the SATA data and power cable to connect from the adapter to the CD/DVD drive. You can look around online for similar products, but they should get the job done!

Hello I have a T2682 and I have taken this computer apart many times and I just got back from Afghanistan and just wanted to see if I could get it going one last time but I forgot what wires plug in where...


The beep you hear is a BIOS Beep Code. The computer's method of informing you something is wrong, and the area to look into for it.

The code is similar to what you may be used to.
(Afghanistan, Army? If so, hello brother/sister. 1st Cav, 13th Sig. Corp)

The BIOS Beep Code is similar to a Morse Code.

Examples:
Two short beeps followed by a long beep, a pause of silence, then the pattern repeats, over, and over.

One short beep indicates everything is okay.
This is an indication that BIOS has concluded the Ram Memory count, and everything is 5 By.

According to my sources, the eMachines T2682 desktop computer uses an Imperial GV motherboard model, made by TriGem.

The front plastic cover of your computer is the Front Panel.
The area on the motherboard that the cables, (Wires), attach to on the motherboard, is the Front Panel header.

Looking at the pinout;

1) Pin 1 is Not used. NC = No Connection

2) Pins 2 and 3 are for the Power On LED light
[Light Emitting Diode]

Pin 2 is for the Ground wire. (GND) ( - )
Pin 3 is for the LED light power wire. ( + )

3) Pin 4 is not used. NC

4) Pins 5 and 6 are for the Harddrive Activity light. (LED)
HDD is HarDDrive

Pin 5 is for the LED power wire
Pin 6 is for the HarDDrive signal wire
(If after attaching the wires the HDD LED light is dim, reverse the wires)

5) Pins 7 and 8 are for the Power On switch.
Pin 7 is for the Ground wire.

Attaching the Peripheral cables;

1) You have an IDE harddrive. Uses a 40-pin IDE ribbon cable.
(39 actually. One pinhole is blocked off)

There is a Locating Tab on one side of the IDE ribbon cable's connector.

Left-click on the blue IDE connector in the photo to the upper right.
At the top middle of the connector you will see two ridges.
This is the Locating Lug.

Now left-click on the IDE connector on the motherboard, shown in the photo to the upper right.
(To the right of the blue IDE connector)

Looking at the blue IDE connector on the motherboard, you will note there is a cutout on one side of the connector.
This is a Locating Slot.

Lining the Locating Lug up to the Locating Slot, puts the pins of the IDE ribbon cable's connector, in the correct position for the pinholes in the motherboard's IDE connector.

IF, your ribbon cable's connector does Not have a Locating Lug;

Look at the outside edge of the ribbon cable. You should see a faint Red stripe.
The Red stripe is always next to Pin 1.

Next to the motherboard's IDE connector should be a printout.
It will state PRI 1, (Stands for Primary 1), or IDE 1.
This is for the Harddrive.

[ If you see PRI 2, or SEC, (Secondary), this is for the optical drive.
(CD/DVD drive). Using this information, you will know the other IDE connector on the motherboard is for the Harddrive ]

That printout is always next to where Pin 1 is.
Therefore on the motherboard, the side of the IDE ribbon cable that has a Red stripe, will go next to the printout.

If your harddrive does not have a Locating Slot on it's IDE connector, Pin 1 is always towards the 4-pin IDE power pins.

(A Peripheral power cable's connector, has been misnomered as a Molex connector, repeatedly through the years.
This was the name given to the first connector of this design.

Here in the photo of the rear view of an IDE harddrive, (Photo to the far left), you will see the 4 power pins.

To the left of the power pins are the Jumper pins.
To the left of the jumper pins, is the IDE interface for the 40-pin IDE ribbon cable.

The Red stripe of the IDE ribbon cable goes towards those 4 power pins.

The Compaq Presario SWV254 Desktop PC uses IDE technology, not SATA.
In the specifications for the above Desktop PC, it states ATAPI is used for the interface technology, and connector, for the optical drive/s.

[IDE is also referred to as PATA. Parallel ATA
SATA is Serial ATA.
The PATA designation was implemented, so that computer users could easily distinct between IDE, and SATA technology]

1) The IDE interface cable, (Flat ribbon cable), has a connector on each end with 40 socket holes.
(39 are actually used. Most of the time, one socket hole is blocked off. (Pin 32)

2) The SATA interface cable has 7 contact pins. Also referred to as a Data cable.

3) The IDE devices, (Harddrive and optical drive), use a 4-pin Molex connector for the power cable.

4) The SATA devices use a 15-pin connector on the end of the power cable.

The Samsung SH223C optical drive is a SATA device.
You cannot just plug it in.

IF, you have an open, (Available), PCI slot on the motherboard, you can use a SATA adapter card.
The SATA adapter card plugs into the PCI slot, and has the necessary connections on the card, for a SATA interface cable.

(NOTE*
Just for the SATA interface cable. Does not have a connection for the SATA power cable, you need.

You have to buy a 4-pin Molex to SATA power cable adapter, and connect it to an available 4-pin Molex power cable, on your power supply.

You will also need a SATA data cable. The interface cable that goes from the SATA adapter card, to the SATA optical drive you're trying to install)

Sony Pcv-w 600G hard drive replacement.


Replacing a hard drive is very simple. A hard drive will have two connectors a one for power(small plug usually white with 4 holes ), and an IDE cable that looks like a ribbon. You just have to remove the cables from the old hard drive and plug them into the new one.
An IDE cable looks like this(clcik here)
You see the four holes next to the IDE cable? Thats where the power connector is plugged in. Let me know if you need anything else.

Can i Install PATA hdd on Dimension 4700


I'm sorry, but I couldn't wade through this bunch responses, so I'm going to give you my own.

You have 2 sata drives installed, already, so you cannot add an additional one w/o a bunch of wonky adapters, so use the IDE channel. You say you have an IDE rom drive. Well, there's a reason there are 3 connections on an IDE cable. One side goes into the motherboard, the other 2 into your drives. The motherboard side is the one furthest away from the center connector. I assume you have the primary connector connected to your rom drive. the 2ndary one would be on your hdd. Why people asked you why you're doing this is beyond me. It works, you'll have an extra drive, your preference. Whatever.

Let me know if you have any more inquiries.

To answer your questions from your original post directly, the other 'ide' channel is specifically for a floppy disk You CANNOT connect an IDE cable to it. And yes, you can connect an  hdd to the slave port on the ide cable.
