Follow every instruction to the letter, including reassigning a drive letter.
How to restore iPod

  1. Ensure that you have an active Internet connection as new versions of iTunes and iPod Software may need to be downloaded to your computer.
  2. Download and install the latest version of iTunes if you do not already have it installed.
  3. Open iTunes, and then connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod.
  4. After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.
  5. Select your iPod in the Source panel and you will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes windows.
  6. Click the Restore button. You will be prompted with one or more restore options that may prompt iTunes to automatically download the latest iPod Software. The 4 possible restore options are:
    • Restore Option 1: Restore - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod.
    • Restore Option 2: Use Same Version - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod even though a newer version is available.
    • Restore Option 3: Use Newest Version - Restores with the latest iPod Software available.
    • Restore Option 4: Restore and Update - Restores with the latest iPod Software available.
  7. If you are using a Mac, a message will appear prompting you to enter an administrator’s name and password.
  8. A progress bar will appear on the computer screen indicating that the first stage of the restore process has started. When this stage is completed, iTunes will present one of two messages on screen with instructions specific to the iPod model you are restoring.
    • Restore Instruction 1: Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).
    • Restore Instruction 2: Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).
  9. During the stage 2 of the restore process, the iPod will show an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remains connected to the computer or iPod Power adapter during this stage. Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see since the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
  10. After stage 2 of the restore process is complete and the iPod is connected to the computer, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear asking you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences similar to when you connected your iPod for the first time.
If the computer is not seeing the iPod, try placing it into disk mode and see if the iPod is then recognized.

Ipod touch 16gb will not restore. Every time i connect to itunes i get a message saying ''itunes has detected an ipod in recovery mode. You must restore this ipod before it can be used with itunes''. So i...

Sounds like it is trying to restore from a bad back up.
If I remeber correctly, you can select which back up to choose from, when the ipod is plugged into itunes and it pops up, right click on it and there should be a option to select which back up to pick from.
If not, google for the firmware (something like ipod touch <model) firmware. be a pretty big file, Under 200mb.
Once downloaded, plug your ipod in on your pc, then clcik restore while holding the 'shift' key, then select this fimrware file you downloaded.
It should be really easy as it is only one file, once done, youll have fresh new ipod. You will loose all your songs/ pics that are currently on there so be warned!

Well i have forgotten my code and now i cant get in to my ipod nano ???

If you forgot the passcode, then you have to restore your ipod. That will erase everything off the ipod and install a new operating system on it.
Connect your ipod with the computer and open itunes. You might get a message that your ipod is locked. If you wont get any message, then go to Summary Page and click on Restore.
If you get that message, then press and hold the middle and menu buttons on your ipod while it is connected with the computer. Let go both the buttons as soon as an apple logo appears on the screen of ipod.
You'll get a message from itunes on the computer screen, "iTunes has detected an ipod in recovery mode, you must restore your ipod." Click ok for the message and then click on Restore button the screen.
You can also call AppleCare at 1800-275-2273
Hope that answers your question

My 1st generation iPod Nano keeps coming up with the error message 'Use iTunes to restore'. I plug it into itunes and it said it detects an ipod in recovery mode..You must restore this ipod before it can...

Hi there,
No, it's not knackered you'll be glad to hear.
  • First things first, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes8 installed.
  • Next, press and hold the Select and Menu buttons together until the apple symbol comes on. It will then show the message you keep getting to connect to iTunes.
  • So connect it to iTunes. This will then say it needs to restore it
  • Click the Restore button where you are given a number of choices. Choose whichever is the bottom one of the choices.
  • During the restore and update leave it connected and during the restart. If the message comes up again, still do not disconnect but click restore again.
  • If none of this works, disconnect then put the ipod into disk mode by pressing and holding Select and Play until it says 'Ok to Disconnect' Which is a weird way of Apple saying 'Please connect me now'! So connect it to the computer, do the restore and that should do it.
If none of that works let me know and we can take it from there.

All the best.

It will not restore, and can't ad music or any other files

You need to put the ipod into recovery mode and then perform the restore

Turn it off

Press and hold the Home button while reconnecting USB cable. When you reconnect USB, the device should then power on.
Keep holding it untill you see "Connect to iTunes" on the screen, you can release the Home button and iTunes will display the recovery mode messag.
