Question about LaCie 16X LIGHTSCRIBE DL d2 DVDRW USB2&FW EU+UI (3660619309788) DVD±RW Dual Layer Burner

LaCie DVD Burner Not Doing Much of Anything

My LaCie will not only not read many DVD’s as well as CD’s, at least on the first try, but also produces more coasters than usable CD’s and DVD’s. I haven’t tried to use the dual layer function much, so I’m not sure if it EVER worked, but it certainly does not do so now; I’ve tried three different brands of blanks: Verbatim, Memorex and Sony. Verbatim blanks it won’t even try, spitting them out with contempt. The other two brands it will make a stab at, but usually gives up less than a third of the way through.
It also will often not recognize commercial disks. Further, my burningsoftware often does not recognize the fact that there is a DVD loaded or even that there is a LaCie burner on my system, recognizing only the built-in player/burner (which only burns CD’s). I can usually correct this problem by unplugging and replugging the LaCie, sometimes more than once; simply turning it on and off doesn’t suffice.

Since I bought this burner primarily to back up data and now find that much of my “backed-up“ data can’t be read, this is the source of much distress.

I have tried several different burning software products including Toast, Popcorn, Fast DVD Copy and some others I DL’ed as demos. I have tried restarting my computer and booting off a different drive. No difference.

I am on a Mac but using the last Tiger rather than Leopard, which I believe is 10.4.11 (which is higher than 10.4.9 rather than just a shade higher than 10.4.1 as one might think).

Thanks, Guru. I’m using Toast 8, which is a recent version. But Popcorn DOES do better - though still no dual DVD’s - so the software does seem to be a factor. Perhaps I was focusing too much on the hardware. That doesn’t explain why the LaCie disk so often fails to show up on my desktop without repeated unplugging/replugging, though. Maybe I should upgrade my OS?

    Thanks again!

You should check for corruption of your CD/DVD burning software from whereever you got it. Sometimes some burning software isn't good enough to work adequately. I'd test some new burning software to see if that is the problem, if upbrading your burning software doesn;t do the trick. You can downlowad free trials of Roxio, NTI, and other good burners to test this hypothesis. And, of course, try calling LaCie support.

Interestingingly, (and I found out when I puchased an Acir Aspire 4 months ago, and its own software hadn't bee properly installed), Windows expolorer would not recognize that I had a Drive E, where my CD/DVD burner was. Wasn't there. I tried downloading drivers for it, and then discovered on some website that it doesn't NEED any drivers, it's all controlled by the burning software, and Microsoft burning software is useless. After I finally managed to get my Acer CD burning software installed, there it was (although it took a while and some other programs to get it working properly). So, yes, having good burning software is essential to Vista or XP recognizing the damned thing. I think the most info actually came from Wikipedia! I know nothiing of Macs, but I do know that you have to try a very good program like Roxio or NTI or a few other biggies.
Be sure to check your device manager for any yellow checkmarks (I'm sure you've done that) but also check to be certain that your computer is configured for USB2. The fact that your computer recognition changes when you plug and unplug the LaCie suggests this. If it is only USB1, that might be the cause. a Super freeware program which will identify everything on your computer from all software with edition and key no.s, hardware IDs and serial nos, all downloads, upgrade status, is Belarc Advisor. I love it. Let me know what the problem was--I bought a LaCie for my daughter. BTW, I recommend storing unlimited data for $4.99/mo online at Mozy.com. (I have no financial interest.) That way, if your house burns down taking your disks, computer and LaCie with it, everything is safely stored and encrypted, waiting to download to your new computer.
And if you ever drop your LaCie, or gets knocked over by an overexuberent pet (like my the high-speed drives never warn you that recovering your data, if even possible, will cost between $500 to $3000 by special labs--that's what happened to my Fantom drive!

DVD/CD NOT READ Fit the cable tightly sata/pata If it same problem fit new cable. Same as before It could be a problem with the lens, you should try cleaningthe lens, it's already gone bad there is no harm in trying

if that doesn't work you can either repalce the lens or purchase a new DVD/CDdrive
Follow these two step I think it would help you.

The CD/DVD burner can read, but can not burn. At maximum speed, it produces an generic error. At low speed, it burns seemingly but the burned CD cannot be read back.

Hello Sir,

It has to be a software error I think. Better try any other CD/DVD Burning software. Let me know if the problem persists.

No installation disc for lacie d2 dvd rw

You shouldn't need an installation disk, just burner software. May I suggest this free burner software? Infra Recorder. I used to use
Nero, but switched to Infra Recorder, and like it Much better!

1.Info about Infra Recorder on Wikipedia.org,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infra_Recorder
2.Infra Recorder homepage,
http://infrarecorder.org/
On this homepage you may want to go to the right, and click on
-> Screenshots, under the Pages heading.

If the Lacie D2 DVD-R/W burner drive is the only optical drive installed, Windows should 'see' it as new hardware. ("Found new
hardware" "Found Lacie D2 DVD-RW")

Be sure the 4-pin Molex power connector, is installed in this optical drive, also the interface cable, and the 4-pin audio cable.
