Search google for the model of the modem your using. If you see a website for the manufacturer, click on it. They should have a support webpage. Here, i'll go one step ahead, click on this link below, or just copy and paste it to the site input above.

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

the hard wired connection to the modem could be a system configuration issue, the cable has gone bad, or the modem is having connectivity issues with the service.
if your optical drives are not working physically, then you can't really fix that. if they just arent responding properly or Windows cant detect that they are there, then you may need to reinstall the driver software for the drives. which can be found on the Dell website or the manufacturer of the optical drives.
yes you can set up a wireless connection with a USB adapter but the modem also needs to have wireless capability in order for you to create the connection.
there are external USB optical drives available. so you can purchase a usb connected CD/DVD drive or burner. they shouldnt be very expensive nowadays.

How do you replace an internal modem on Dell Dimension 5100 desktop? Can we replace it with an external modem? Do you have to remove the old internal modem before you can replace it with an external modem?...

yes you can replace it with an external modem or you can purchase a PCI card modem and install it. The old internal modem does not have to be removed, but if it helps you can uninstall the drivers for it.

Need an external modem for an Acer LE 1600 compatible with Vista Home Basic OS

jiggs734,
Most any USRobotics/3COM USB modem should work with your Acer LE 1600. I would suggest going with USR/3COM as opposed to other modems because they are one of the most well respected modems on the market. Also, drivers are updated from time to time, and support is available on many forums.

I hope this helps. If it does, please rate the solution offered. My goal is always FixYa or Helpful, never TFT or IA. Regards,

Installing modem

By the looks of your question, it appears you may have an internal PCI modem. If that is the case, please state your PCI modem brand and model. You may have what is called a WinModem or "softmodem" because they were usually US Robotics modems made strictly for windows. They are known to be buggy with their software drivers and hard to install but not impossible. Since softmodems use your CPU's power one solution would be to change to an external modem (since they have their own processor) and save yourself some headaches later on.

Thanks.
