The battle: Acer Vs. Verizon FiOS

My Acer Aspire 5520 seems to be totally incompatible with Verizon Fios. It won't stay wirelessly connected to the internet, and won't allow me to install the Verizon Internet Security Suite. No one seems to be able to help me. Verizon says that it's a problem with the Laptop...

    My Acer Aspire One will not keep it's wireless internet connection for more than a few minutes when connected to my Actiontec wireless router provided to me by Verizon FiOS. I have two other laptops and they connect flawlessly to the Actiontec wirelessly.

    The Acer connects fine, shows full strength, but when I goto surf the web, it get the blank page stating no internet connect and "detect settings" that you get whenever you lose a connection.

    All of my laptops are running XP, and I have set the ACER's settings to mirror my other two laptops (Dell, HP) so I don't think it's my settings on the ACER preventing my connection.

    After much research, it appears that many people are having trouble connecting their ACER to the Verizon FiOS provided Actiontec modems.

    Can anybody help me please?

    I had Verizon FIOS installed on Friday and I also own an ACER. The installer was having the same difficulties as you all have been discussing. My connection keeps cutting out from the Verizon wireless router. Verizon said sometimes the Verizon router won't work throughout the whole house when in actuality I tried it in the same room and the problem persisted. The installer connected the Verizon wireless router to my Linksys and still it doesn't work. I have Vista on my ACER laptop and I know that came up in the discussions. Is there are solution? Thanks.

Verizon needs to apply a firmware update for the Atheros wireless adapter in your notebook. I work for Acer and I end up having to tell people this all day long. If you take this to a wireless router that is not from verizon you will have no problems with your connection. Maybe if enough Fios customers complain they will provide a firmware update for this.

I had the same problem when I switched over to the FIOS system. My Acer 5520 would not hold the signal at all. I had had a DSL connection previously and had used a Net Gear router without a problem. When it was first hooked it, it worked for a little bit and that was it. After all the frustrating, time consuming calls to Verizon I got a technician who came out and when he was done looking and trying to figure out what was going on, gave me his own phone number so I could reach him instead of going through the horrible "press this number" route. My neighbor has FIOS and an Acer and he had no trouble, but when I tried at his home I could not. The technician said he could try hooking back through the Net Gear router and came back yesterday and did just that, not using the Verizon router at all. I am in business, hooked up, no dropped signals and high speed. So, a solution to try is to not use the router provided by Verizon and use a Net Gear router.

Right, if you take that ACER laptop to another router it probably will work fine. How ever, if I sit right next to you with an HP laptop that will work fine too. The actiontec is using 802.11G wireless with a WEP 64bit HEX Encryption. I have been on several ACER computers. Its ONLY ACER computers that have this wireless issue with it dropping the network every 5 seconds. So ACER says verizon needs to fix it, and Verizon says ACER needs to fix it. The bottom line is, what is actaually causing the problem?

There is a simple fix for the acer 5520 laptop and fios....After a week of pulling my hair out I fixed my wireless connection. No thanks to Verizon Help jerks.

That means there is a corrupt or a missing wireless driver on your new acer laptop. First of all if you are using Windows XP follow the following
1. Go to start
2. Right-click on "My computer"
3. Go to "Properties
4. Go to Hardware tab
5. Go to Device manager
In the device manager check for any yellow question mark or an exclamation mark. Especially on the network adapters. That means if you had the network drivers working before, then they are corrupt or they are not there at all.

Here is the solution..
visit and go to their downloads and support tab, you will be abel to see the model of your computer and you can download the wireless drivers that are compatible with your laptop.

Have a new Acer Aspire 5517, when I move the computer more than 7-10' from the router the signal goes from Execellent to poor/lost connection. 5 other computers on this Verizon Fios network run great with...

Take both excuses out of the equation. Buy a wireless N dongle off ebay (you can pick them up dirt cheap).

Router would pick up dongle using it's own software (Acer's excuse) and would not know or care the make of notebook (verizon's excuse)

My toshiba laptop has problems connecting wirelessly to verizon fios, they claim it is my internal wireless card because my other computers can connect. How can I fix this?

There are some wireless card which doesn't support verizon fios.Check out if your Card is supported or not.if not supported ask their Customer service for a USB wireless Card Brand and its specification which with work fine with verizon fios.

It will solve the problem.

Anything is possible but it would take a lot of work to jam wireless signals. As a communications company, Verizon, if caught would be in hot water with the FCC. I have an idea. Are you able to change channels on your wireless and try it. Also, is there anyway you could try a different wireless router? If FIOS is coming in, there may be maintenance changes in the infrastructure that effect your internet performance.

My wireless connection won't work

Those pieces if data come from your FiOS gear. On the bottom of the FiOS Wireless and network set, is a serial number, and associated with that is another number, call it your password, but together they are the profile and Password with which you gain access to the FiOS Network, to allow you to get out to the Internet.
Check all installation papers you got from Verizon, as that information should be there, or call their help line. They are usually pretty good in helping you and FiOS is not off-shore, so you will get a good response.

Sounds like a bad router or antenna. Try replacing the antenna or checking the connection of the antenna on the router. Have your ISP replace the router and the problem should go away.

I have an Acer 5420 which had a persistent disconnection problem after startup, with either the wireless or LAN connection. It appears that the Microsoft network application would startup and make the connection, but seconds later the Acer Enet Management application would start, and its first act would be to disconnect from the Internet. Since the Microsoft network application provides every feature that I want, I choose to disable the Acer Enet Management.
  1. Following up on a hint from on of the posts, I went to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt.
  2. At the command prompt window, I typed msconfig
  3. About a minute later (after Vista confirmed that it was OK to run this program, the System Configuration window comes up, where I selected the "services" tab
  4. Scrolling down the numerous services, I found "eNet service" and clicked the check mark to disable the service. Hit apply and OK, and restarted my laptop.
  5. The problem went away after that.
