I want to share an HP 7760 on an XP with Win 7

I have an HP 7760 attached to a desktop running XP. I would like to share this printer over my LAN with a laptop running Windows 7, but cannot find a driver for the laptop. Do you have any ideas?

To get ahead of myself and answer your question first, your Win 7 machine may automatically load a driver for your shared printer.

Please have a look at the procedure below: (these instructions assume that your XP machine is sharing the HP printer and that your Win 7 laptop can "see" your network and the shared printer connected to your XP desktop computer)

On the Win7 machine, follow these steps:

1) In "Control Panel" click "Add local printer"
2) Create New Port > Local port
3) Port Name is "\\xpcomputername\printername" - without the quotes

(insert the XP's real network name and your printer's real name in the above location)

4) Click <OK>

5) Windows 7 should automatically load a driver allowing you to print on the HP connected to the XP from the Win7 laptop.

I hope this helps!

Printer HP Photosmart C5180 Series cannot be contacted over the network

Check with HP for a Windows 7 driver for the printer. HP Ink Jets require proper drivers to work correctly. Once you have downloaded and installed the drivers try connecting again.
If you have installed the drivers and Windows 7 still refuses to "talk" to the printer, you may have to adjust your advanced network settings as well. Open up the Network and Sharing center, click on advanced sharing settings and make sure file and printer sharing is turned on. Also check "File Sharing Connections" and enable file sharing for devices that use 40 or 56 bit encryption.
If that fails to work you may need to speak with HP support for further assistance.

Networking issues

Sounds like your printer isn't configured for "sharing." Go to Control panel > Network and Sharing Center > Choose homegroup and sharing options. Make sure Printer has a check mark.

If you have any other computers, check them to see if you can print from them.

HP LaserJet 1022 has been installed on a PC (WIN 7 x 64), shared option checked, but 4 other PCs do not locate the printer on the network. (3 pcs with Win7 x 64, 1 with Win XP x 32). Can you suggest...

go into the properties of your network connection, and click change advanced sharing options

Sorry for the lousy screen capt there, but you should get the idea of where everything should be set.
password protected sharing off is important
turn on network discovery is the other really important one
and of course, enable file and printer sharing.

If you get lost, post a reply here!

Is there a way I can print wireless from my laptop through the desktop attached to the Canon Pixma MX310 printer?

Yes.
The desktop and laptop both need to be attached to the same network.

On your desktop:
Go to Control Panel, Printers and Faxes
Right click on your printer, and click on "Sharing"
Share the printer on your network

On your laptop:
Go to Control Panel, Printers and Faxes
"Add Printer"
Choose a "Network attached Printer"
Browse for the printer, and add in.

Just bought win 7 laptops wont connect to my lexmark x1180 printer connected to my desktop running xp any ideas?

Enable File and Print Sharing on your XP system.
Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click Printers
Enable "sharing' for the printer.

Click Start
Right-mouse click My Computer
Click Properties
Click Computer Name
to show the current "workgroup" name on your XP system.

On the Windows 7 system:
Configure it into the same workgroup.
Then, "Add Network Printer", connecting to your XP system, and pointing at the shared printer.

I HAVE HP LASERJET 1018 PRINTER. I INSTALLED & SHARED PRINTER ON WIN XP BASED PC. NOW I WANT TO SHARE THIS PRINTER ON ANOTHER PC HAVING WIN SERVER 2003 OS. WHEN I AM INSTALLING THE SERVER ASKED FOR...

The drivers should be the same. When you share the printer, just make your Windows Server 2003 go to the computer with the printer shared by typing the IP address of the computer in the Run Box (Start > Run), for example \\192.168.1.100\. If your XP machine is set correctly, you should see the Printer and Faxes icon, or the printer icon. Double click on that and your printer will be installed with the drivers that XP uses (which are the same, just double checked) so you don't need to do any installing.
