Operating system or Firewire hookup... could be faulty..currupt.. double check that first then try from there.

Hi,

You will need the VL-Z1 CD-ROM Drivers/Software to get your computer to recognize it. The software comes with your camera when you buy it. You can find a replacement by clicking the above link.

Does your Inspiron have a Firewire socket? (my Inspiron 1720 has a 4 pin F/wire), If so try a F/wire to F/wire lead instead of F/wire to USB.
There are three sizes of F/wire socket, 4 pin, 6 pin and 9 pin which can be bought in any combination of the three.
Good luck.

I cant transfer my videos from sony handycam dcrhc36 to my computer os window 7 evenafter downloading pmb from sony sitemy computer is not detecting the handycam

You don't say what type of connection you are trying to use. This type of camera usually downloads better with a Firewire (DV) connection. Some mini-DV cameras only use the USB connection (if they have one) for stills and can only download video by Firewire. This is because you have to play the tape into the computer, not just copy a file. The way it works on my computer, the camera is controlled by the computer software through the Firewire cable. Confusingly, Sony call Firewire "i.Link".

Most PCs have a USB port, but no Firewire port. Macs often have a Firewire port but may not have USB. As most Windows PCs do not come with this interface, you might need to fit an add-on Firewire interface card. This will come with a driver for the card. If you have a MAC, you may already have a port.

Suitable Firewire (DV) cables can easily be found on Amazon or eBay. You will need the kind with a small (four pin) connector at one end and a larger (six pin) connector at the other. My camera came with the correct lead.

You apparently have a Firewire (DV) cable.

As your Dell Windows PC did not come with this interface, you need to fit an add-on Firewire interface card to the internal expansion bus (PCI). This will come with a driver for the card. You can buy one of these cheaply on eBay or Amazon.

Transferring camcoder to computer form

Had same problem...although manual states you can transfer via USB, it doesn't work and won't no matter how many drivers you find. What does work is a Firewire cables. You have three options but I only have tried and proven one. Options:

1. 4-Pin to 4-Pin Firewire transfer cable. The camera has a Firewire port directly below the AC Power adaptor port. This worked fine pulling the video to my PC using Windows Media Transfer. No drivers necessary...at least for Vista. As soon as I plugged in the camera, a window opened asking what actions I wanted to take. Only my HP Laptop equipped with 4-Pin Firewire.

2. 4-Pin (Camera) to 6-Pin Firewire (PC). My Laptop or Desktop not equipped.

3. 4-Pin Firewire (Camera) to USB (PC). Might work but since I couldn't pull data through Camera USB, didn't want to invest in this cable configuration.

Solution in future is buy a bunch of SD Media cards (Not SD-HC) and stop using tape. Transfer direct to PC from SD Card.

The USB port on the camera is to download still pics from the Camera's SD Card to your computer. USB connector is not for video downloading.

For video downloading you have to use FireWire port. Your computer must have a FireWire port too. You will need some sort of video downloading software - like Microsoft's MovieMaker. There are some free software to download videos from mini dv camcorders to computer. It takes 1Hr to download 1Hr tape - you have to play it all to record it all.

3yrs ago when I purchased this cam, I did not have FireWire port in my computer. I searched online a lot and found a way to download video using USB - it was tough, complicated. It was possible, but quality was too bad and too many dropped frames.

If you do not have firewire port, google for FireWire PCI Card, should be <$10. You have to install it inside your PC. Also search for FireWire cable ($10+/-) that will match BOTH camera and PC ports.

Thank you.

My computers do not recognize sony dcr-hc28 camcorder

Hi, I'm from the Philippines. I have the same handycam model. The first time I connected it to my PC (Windows XP) via firewire, nothing happened. It cannot detect my handycam. I returned the firewire card to the shop where I bought it. They tested it and the firewire card is ok but the firewire cable is defective so they replaced it. When I got home, I tested it again but still the handycam cannot be detected by my PC. I went online to find a solution and I came upon a solution that you need to attach/connect your charger to the handycam before you connect your handycam to your PC. It said that the handycam needs a steady supply of power to be able to connect to the PC. It sounded weird but I tried it and BINGO! The handycam got detected. I was able to capture my videos.

I also have a TV Tuner & Capture Card but when I capture videos thru the RF cables, the videos losses quality and videos are blurred. Thats the reason I bought a firewire card.

Firewire connection not responding

Take a magnifying glass to the firewire port on the camera. Check to see if it looks damaged at all. I've used firewire with my students for many years and this has happened to me on more than one occasion. The student is not as careful as he could be when plugging in the cable. The inside of the firewire cable becomes damaged. This is a cheap fix. Buy a new cable. However, when the port is damaged, it is an expensive fix. Since the computer recognizes another camcorder it may not be the computer. And if you are using the same cable, then it will probably be a hardware issue with the camera. Look at the port and let me know if anything looks out if place.

Saving Dv tape to computer? Getting computer to see camera?

The USB connection is for getting still images (photos) off the camcorder. To get moving images (video) off the camcorder, you must use a FireWire cable (IEEE 1394). The cable only costs about $15. But you need to have a FireWire port on your computer to plug it into -- if you don't have one, you'll have to install a FireWire card. Check someplace like TigerDirect computer parts supplier, they are only $15 to $60 now.

Or, if you don't want to open up your computer to install a FireWire card, you can buy a Pinnacle MovieBox for $120. It just sits next to your computer, not inside. It is very easy to use and comes with great video editing software. You plug the FireWire from your camcorder into the front of the MovieBox, then plug the back of the MovieBox into your computer with USB.

Plus, you can use the MovieBox to record from your VCR or DVD player into your computer! For that, you'll need the standard red/white/yellow cables.

In fact, if your camcorder has those cables, you can use them to go thru the MovieBox, and save yourself the cost of the FireWire cable. But I think FireWire will give better quality than the red/white/yellow cable.
