Lens Error/wont open

Hello,

I turn the camera on, but the lens wont come out and doesn't even sound as though it is attempting too. I really need this to work, as my daughter is having a baby any day and this is the only camera we have. I don't want a cheap disposable for this important event. Any help you can give will be very appreciated!

Thank you so much,

Margot

    Hello,

Thank you so much for responding. To the best of my knowledge, it has never been dropped, and I have brand new batteries in it. I don't have the battery pack for recharging, just good old fashioned Duracell. I've tried putting another set of fresh ones in, but still wont work.

    Hello,

No, what had happened, is the batteries were dead from using the camera, we put in a new set, and the lens error came up, and the lens wouldn't open...tried another set (new) just in case, and have the same problem. This is the 3rd set I have tried now, and all from different packs. The dates are good, and they work with other things like discman and gameboy (the red light is not on, which indicates a low battery on the gameboy). So I don't believe the batteries are the problem.

If it has been dropped, which I doubt, as I am the only one that uses it...is there something that I can try?

I appreciate your efforts very much,

    Margot

  • Margot530 Mar 06, 2008

Well, it sure can't hurt to try at this point...lol

Should I do this with the camera on (wont stay on but for a few seconds) or off, and where on the camera would it be best to tap it?

  • Margot530 Mar 06, 2008

Okay, I gave it a try, and nothing. So I guess we go to the repair shop.

Thank you so much for all your help, you truly have been great!

The camera was dropped while it was on. The lens is stuck in the open position. When the camera is first started it sounds like tiny gears spinning but not catching. It doesn't really grind or...

Before trying any of the suggestions, make sure your Canon has fresh batteries and it is in recording mode.
1) Remove the batteries from the camera, wait for a couple of minutes, then put them back in and turn the camera on.
2) Try compressed air. With a fine tip blow off gun and dry compressed air (20 lbs) set the tip between the lens turret and the camera body and turn on the air while moving the tip around the lens. It should remove all dust and sand. Turn the camera on and it should function fine.
3) Another method is to tap the padded USB cover part on a hard surface, for example, a desk. It sounds so simple, but very often in works.
4) Try forcing the camera lens:
Turn off the camera. Place it on the back with the lens facing up and take a look at the spacing between the lens and the lens housing. If you notice that the gap is not even all the way around the lens, the problem should be easy to fix. This type of a problem usually occurs if the camera was dropped while the lens was extended.
Simply - VERY GENTLY - press down the lens on the side where the gap is the biggest. You should hear a "click" as it pops back into place. Try powering the camera back on.
If the lens doesn't extend at all or it extends, and then retracts again, do the following. Turn the camera off. Take the camera in one hand and with the other gently take one part of the lens and gently move it round in a circular movement. Do so with both sections of the lens. You will hear a "click" as it pops back in place. Power the camera on.
Another version of this fix would be to pull and twist on the largest ring of the lens while turning the camera on. Listen for a "click". If at first the focus seems to be off, turn the camera on and off and take lots of pictures, close ups and distance. Focus should slowly start improving.
5) If that doesn't work, there is an online guide for dismantling Canon SD cameras:http://www../Device/Canon_Powershot_SD880 or

When I turn my DMC-TZ3 on, the lens open's up then shut'soff then open's again then shut's off again and a message appears saying shut camera off and try again, will not stay open why is...

A recycling lens is usually caused by either a low or worn out battery (how old is your battery? If more than a couple years, it would be definitely time for a new one. Here's a selection.). If a new battery doesn't help (but it really does sound like you need a new battery), the next problem that could cause this is a lens error. Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to lens error problems can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some last resort troubleshooting steps that you can try that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try.

Camera lens wont open

Saw a similar problem recently, same cause, and result was the lens was jammed.

Did manage to wiggle it free after many attempts...it only stays on for a few seconds before faulting and going off...but it's a bit hard to get a hold on the edge of the lens to pop-out the low side.

Started by laying it on it's back and checking the level of the lens edges for the low spot, then used a thick sewing needle to lift up while turning the unit on (again and again) until the gear-ring popped back in during the lens-check at start-up.

Lens error

Hello

The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.

Use these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.

Firstly , try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.

Try holding the shutter button while switching on the camera.

Look at the lens , and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).

Try gently pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.

Another way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the camera is enough to get things going again.

Try hitting your camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of your hand.

Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair center for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to replace the camera.

If it is still under warranty I would suggest you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

You can also have a look at THIS link.

Hope the advise is useful. please do not hesitate to let me know if you need any further assistance.

Regards
Andrea

Lens wont extend, lens error restart camera

My wife's Canon SD200 got stuck with an open lens and the E18 error. I opened the case and wiggled things and still nothing. Then, I turned the camera on and started tapping the edge of the lens casing with the magnifying glass I'd been using (need the battery and memory chip in place and make sure you've transferred pictures to your computer before trying this). Voila! The lens closed. But, of course, it wouldn't open and still gave the E18 error. Well, one good tap deserved another and Voila! again. It opened. After a few more iterations - and cleaning the lens casing each time, it was back to normal. The trick is the timing of the tapping. Just after turning on the power to the camera start tapping on the lens casing - not hard - just a light tapping. And don't tap on the glass lens itself -- you don't want to really break it.

Lens error

This lens is in need of repair, though contrary to what some of the people on this site will say, paying $150 for a lens repair is completely unnecessary.
Usually a problem like what you are having is just a realignment and cleaning of the lens and gears. This in itself is a relatively cheap repair ($50-$75) Sometimes however, the plastic housing covering the lens itself gets damaged, or the lens twists inside the housing, which many times can require purchasing a new lens (this will run $150 or so).

Kodak Easy Share C330 lens error 14 and lens error 22

Hello,

I bought two of these on clearance and gave one to my in-laws. She suspected that one of her kids may have dropped the camera or pushed in the lens. I don't remember which lens error number had shown up, but I dis-assembled the camera to find out what the deal was. If I remember correctly, there is a way to manually turn the gears to put he lens back out. I left the lens out and turned it on and it worked perfectly. Fair warning though. It is VERY IMPORTANT not to touch the contacts for the flash EVEN WITH THE BATTERIES OUT!!! God did it hurt like hell... unfortunately it is fairly easy to do and I must have accidentally done it about 4-5 times while messing with it..
