Power outage problems

My computer will not reboot after a power outage. There's a black screen that says "Compaq" and Esc=reboot, f1=yadda yadda, f10=system recovery but nothing happens when I hit these buttons to reboot my computer. What should I do?

Power outages can cause problems. Based upon the symptoms your motherboard or hard drive has been damaged.

On the bottom, it shows <esc=boot menu> <f1=setup> <f10=system recovery> but it doesn't respond to anything or move from this screen

Check that your keyboard is connected, and is working properly.
Try your keyboard on a different computer.
Try a different keyboard on your computer.

The 'ESC' key should always work.
The 'F1' key should always work.
If your disk-drive is *NOT* "dead", then the 'F10' key should work.

If neither 'ESC' nor 'F1' work, you have a serious problem with the motherboard.

I have two computers and the screen turned black at the same time. i know the monitors work because i can hit f1 and i can seen and work on the screen. i tried to reboot but nothing happens and i also...

The problem might be that your system is trying to start with a high resolution that your screen can't support. All you have to do is to reduce the resolution of your screen, so follow these steps

- Reboot your computer.
- Press F8 right before Windows starts you will get a troubshooting menu.
- Select start on VGA mode.
- Once you are on the system.
- Go to your Control panel->Display->Settings->Screen Resolution.
- Decreese the screen resolution. Try 1024x768 or other resolutions, if the screen turn to black, press ESC to discard that resolution and then try an other one.

Good luck.

How do I acces the Bios on a Compaq Presario 5000 built somehere around 2002.

during the bootup post routines you should see a message that tells you what to do to go into the bios.

Sometimes the post routine is run without being shown on the screen. If so, try pushing the F2 button, or DEL key during the bootup sequence.

Good luck!

Computer Power comes on, shows compaq first screen, then everything stops. press esc, F10 or F12 and nothing happens. just continues to show the compaq screen. Any suggestions?

Try unplugging everything you can from the computer. Only leave keyboard, monitor, and power cables connected. Then try to turn on again. If computer boots now, then start adding peripherals back one at a time, rebooting each time. when you get the hang, there is your suspect peripheral.

Also, is the monitor itself having issues, or is it the computer? Look at the power light on the monitor, is it staying green, or is turning back to same color when it is in standby state?

hi there..
turn of your computer..
unplug all the cables...
press and hold down the power key which is on your cpu for atleast 5 - 10 secs..
after that ..please connect the power cable.. mouse.. key board. monitor and your internet cable..
and then restart your computer..
when you restart your computer keep tapping the f1 key (i hope this is for bios)..
restore to default over there.. press enter to save.. once done this would automatically reboot..

The Start up screen for Compaq series computers is normal, that screen takes you into your BIOS mode. when the screen appears press F1, at the bottom of the screen it will say press F5 or one of those keys to install your Default Settings, Click Yes and Exit. That should do it. Good Luck.

You're talking about My PC and device manager and I'm talking about Bios.
The BIOS (stands for Basic Input/Output System) is system software inside your computer that helps the computer start up, even before Windows does. It also contains key settings about what the computer has on board.
In newer computers, it exists on a special chip called CMOS (stands for Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor).

You can go into the BIOS to edit or change the technical information about key components of the computer like disk drives, keyboards, and display settings. It also keeps track of the date and time.
The BIOS can normally be accessed when you start your computer. You may see a reference to "Setup" when you turn your computer on. That’s your opportunity to get into the BIOS. It usually requires the push of a function key, such as F10, to get access to it. That "F" key varies between computers. Sometimes it’s not even one of the Function keys, but the ESC key or DEL key.

If a logo screen—like HP or Dell—is displayed during the start up process instead, then you may want to check with your computer maker for a command to turn off that screen and display the start up information, which is listed when a computer is powered on.
A partial list of BIOS access commands by brand is listed at the end of this article.
The BIOS also contains the boot-up sequence. Normally, computers are configured to boot from a hard drive.

Before you do anything to your BIOS, it’s always a good idea to record the original settings on a sheet of paper that can be kept in a safe place so you can reference it later if you need to reset it.
Here is a list of key sequences for various brand-name computers. If yours is not there, check with your manufacturer or watch for info flashed on-screen when your computer first starts, before Windows begins. It may say

"For setup hit..." That will be how to get into the BIOS on your machine.

1801 Microcode Patch Error

I bought a Compaq Computer, 2.0Ghz, 256MB, 20GB for my College project. When i put the power on, it restarts almost immediately (so many times repeatedly). Then after such reboots, it successfully brings a message "1801 - Microcode Patch Error" and a F1-Boot directive.
