There are a couple of options for unlocking your phone. It's technically owned by you and you have a right to obtain the unlock code directly from the carrier, AT&T. However, they will put you through the ringer (no pun intended) to get it from them. If you're up for a battle, call them and ask for it. They will tell you it's not possible, but you can contact the VP Complain Specialist Office at 800-498-1912.
