I can only suggest that you bang it around more, against your palm or other surface like hot pad, mouse pad, etc. that has some give and see if that undoes the damage (if it is a dis-connection issue). You didn't mention physically damaging it (as in dented) so soft blows and retrying the camera after each attempt may result in it working again. Try blows from different angles and speciffically from the opposite direction of the drop, if you know how it hit (a mark?).
It does sound like it is "hunting" for a sensor signal that it is not getting.

Hi,
I dont suggest to experiment with the dented lens as there are some plastic gears inside the lens unit, those can be break and if those gears will broken, it will be very difficult to re-find them.
So look for a authorised service center and get the camera repaired. If thay say for replacing the lens unit. You may search for an professional to get the camera repaired.

Well actually my camera is a cybershot dsc-w100 and when i push the on button it says access but after that it goes to a mode where it says turn the power on and off again and i turn it off but still does...

Lens errors (access errors on Sony's) are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:

When i turn on my camera it turns on then goes to a black screen and says lens error 0x0311. It was never dropped or anything its only a few months old it just started doing this one day.

There's a really good blog about fixing lens errors, and you can find it here. You don't have to have dropped it to cause this problem, it can be sand or grit in the mechanism, or it was accidentally turned on at a time when the lens could not come out.

Lens Stuck

If the lens is stuck out then you will find it is usually one of a few reasons.

1. Check the batteries. (obvious I know).
2. The camera has been dropped or knocked.
3. The camera has grit or dirt in the lens mechanism.

Providing the batteries are ok then 2 and 3 usually mean a professional repair. The lenses tend not to be something that the average home user can remove and take apart. The cost of repair also might be more than the camera value so you will need to find a good repair shop near you and get a quote.

My optio was dropped with the lens going down first. now my camera makes noises & the screen is black. how do i go about fixing it?

looks like the gears or retracting mechanics are damaged.

its problably not worth to take it in, to get it fixed (depends on the camera). but most likely sound like the gears are busted.

you be paying for repairs that costing waaay more than the camera.
