Hey can anyone help me, my Compaq nc6000 won't connect to wireless networks it says something about a smart card.

Make sure that the antenna on your wireless router is not damaged or pointed the wrong way (down or the the side). Also if you look under the cover under your laptop make sure that the wireless antenna is properly plugged in to your laptop's radio. I have seen a few loose ones here and there.

If wireless card is listed in device manager under network adapters-that means you dont have to install it. If you running on vista, go to control panel and find ssomething like wireless contol manager or wireless assistant and see if its not disabled there. may also be disabled in bios settings. on windows xp-check if windows has possibility to manage wireless networks or its blocked by third party software. for example i use bt voyager wireless card and its managed by bt software. built in cards are likely managed by windows. type services.msc in run box and see if wireless zero configuration service is enabled.

try uninstalling the wireless driver wit the wired & reinstalling them if problem persist...backup ur files & do a clean installation of your Operating system

if u truely wanna see u have a wifi then go to device manager from my computer and click device manager and go to network adapters and explore it u must see it there and to get connected to awireless network, get closer to atmoast 100m from a wireless source and the network connections tab will give a message if not then u lack driver

The WEP or WPA key combination you would create must have numbers, alphabets and signs

First try to repair ur windows If u can't repair it then just format windows.
First take data backup...............

If your neighbors know that your using their router, you might ask them to reset it. If they moved it, this could cause the weakening of the signal, walls drastically decrease a wireless signal. You might also refresh your wireless card by uninstalling the wireless drivers and reinstalling them.
