I'm tring to download the driver software onto my HP laptop but doesn't seem to work. Should I see an icon once this has successfully downloaded?

Yes it should be, but first try to uninstall the drivers, disconnect the printer usb cable connection, turn off the printer. then install again your drivers, but dont connect the usb cable yet, when the software prompts that it should be connect it, connect usb cable then power on the printer, let it run what it should do, dont interrupt any installation, when its done, youre off to go.

Cannot uninstall - no longer have software. When I try to uninstall, I get message that says cannot find shell.dll.

You could always download & reinstall the drivers from Epson:

Then unistall it again, although leaving the old drivers takes up little disk space and will not harm your PC by leaving in place.

I only have black ink. I'm tring to print but it's not allowing me to print. I only get an error reading.

Depending on the make of printer you have. For example Epson, requires you to have both black and color cartridges in the printer even if your only printing black and white.

No link between computer& epson 580

Normal 0 Could have a corrupt driver.
Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off. I'd do both and when the CD software program asks you to connect the printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.
Hope this helps. Bud
