Question about HP Presario s6104nx PC Desktop

2 Answers

Missing File Okay, so I setup my computer after being away from it for a year having left it in the hands of my "fam". Whenever I start up the computer, a screen pops up with two options. Its appears and disappears too quickly for me to pinpoint it but I believe the first is to head straight to Windows XP Home Edition while the second one leads to something along the lines of Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, don't quote me on any of that. In anycase, give it a quick second literally and it goes to black. A few minutes afterwards I get a blue screen that pretty much says an error occurred and, in order to prevent further damage, the boot-up process was brought to a halt. I'm not a big fan of that screen because that was the last thing I saw before my last computer died in 02. I tried booting up in Safe Mode to the same screen. Lastly I tried selecting the Recovery Console and that's when I got the message saying Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\system32\ntoskrnl.exe I was digging through problem and solution topics on this site and ran into one revolving around a similar problem but in reference to another system file. So I followed the solution for that and tried to use my XP disc to recover the file. While I can't say that didn't work, the deeper I got into that, the more I felt like it was going to force me to reinstall XP as a whole and wiping my harddrive clean. So, as a safety precaution, I called up HP to ask them how to go about doing that. Basically what they told me was that if I couldn't open the computer in Safe Mode, the issue was much more serious and would require something other than a simple returning of the file. The os would have to be completely reinstalled, the one answer I didn't want to hear because I have program files that I want that I don't know the exact location of (last time my uncle got his laptop wiped, they asked him to pinpoint a location to have everything we wanted save which, in that case, was My Documents). So, all of that was leading down to this... is the Presario Tech correct? Because of the fact that I can't enter Safe Mode, do I really have to sacrifice everything and reinstall Windows XP Home Edition, or can I just repair the computer by locating and replacing the file in question? And if I can repair it, what is the best method of going about doing that? Last thing I want is to select a repair option that "forgets" to warn me that it'll kill everything I have on my comp. Thanks in advance for any input.

Check this:
You can either read it all or click "Skip to Repair Install"
This does NOT overwrite your programs/data/pics/music etc.

Read it carefully and follow the instructions.

The Problem you cannot wipe out because you have important files on that machine.

Please try this solution:
Missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe file If the ntoskrnl.exe file is corrupt or missing this can also generate the error. To restore this file follow the below steps.

  1. Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD. Note: If you have a recovery CD or a restore CD and "not a Microsoft Windows XP CD it is likely the below steps will not resolve your issue. "
  2. Reboot the computer, as the computer is starting you should see a message to press any key to boot from the CD. When you see this message press any key.
  3. In the Microsoft Windows XP setup menu press the R key to enter the recovery console.
  4. Select the operating system you wish to fix, and then enter the administrator password.
  5. Type expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32
  6. You will then be prompted if you wish to overwrite the file type Y and press enter to overwrite the file.
  7. Type exit to reboot the computer.

On ther hand You can try copy "ntoskrnl.exe" from the other computer. and then attached your harddrive then copy the file from c:\windows\system32 to your harddrive.\system32. afte loading the file disconnect he HDD and fix back to your casing and then try turn on the system. this work on other computer just try in your computer.

Or else You are force to backup all your files and continue what they said"reformatting and reinstallation". anyway you can install all the application programs what you use.

best regards, melnavz

Use your system restore disks to repair your computer since the OS is FUBAR
Without those disks you are SOL. And if you never made them or lost them, now you have learned first hand why it is so important to have them.
Go to the dell site and see if they have your original OS in an iso file for installation. If so that will save your sorry b---.

Missing call setup in yahoo mssngr 9.0 in my acer notebook

Sounds like you may have tried to download without clearing out your browser or failed to check the Messenger file was empty before uploading your new messenger. As a result some of your software and features are missing
When downloading/uploading close all other programs.
I suggest you download and run ccleaner first before you proceed further. Run it through a couple of times - include "registry" from the left hand toolbar. Do not be alarmed at the amount of files you have to delete, especially if you do not clear it on a regular basis.
Use this path to uninstall and remove the old messenger software.
> Start > computer > local disc (C) > program files > yahoo > messenger > UNWISE.
UNWISE is the command that starts uninstall. Make sure the file is clean before downloading - I run messenger 9 with no problems although I read here its "full of bugs" but that's because its not been installed cleanly. Yahoo tell us its the best one to operate behind a firewall.
Check in the Messenger file after uninstalling to make sure no fragments of software remain that will create conflicts with the new software.
Delete shortcut on desktop
Download new freeware browser - mozilla firefox
Restart computer
Download the version of messenger you want using firefox

When downloading from filehippo avoid the adverts and use the green arrows to start downloads

Normal 0 Try disconnecting the Camera from the USB port and reinstall the CD software program. When the program asks you to connect the camera to the USB port, do so and it should work.
Then to use it on the Web do this.
Web Camera’s have to be setup on the program they are to be used with. Just installing the camera on your computer does not set it up to broadcast on messengers or Skype.
Each program has Options that have to be setup in order for the Audio and Video to function properly.
A. Skype Setup:
After downloading and installing Skype ( ) set it up as follows:
  1. Go to Tools, then Options, and click on Audio Settings and set the Microphone and Speakers to the computer Audio Card.
  2. Then click on the Video Settings.
  3. The camera if Installed Properly will come up and show a video picture.
  4. Then, on the bottom of the page click on Save.
The camera and audio should function properly. Your friends and Family will now be able to see and her to you.
B. Yahoo Setup:
After downloading and installing Yahoo Messenger ( ) set it up as follows:
  1. Go to Messenger at the top left and click on it.
  2. Next go down to Preferences and click on it.
  3. Next Calling and Devices on the right and set the Microphone and Speakers to the computer Audio Card.
  4. Next go to the Test Audio section and (in blue writing) click on “Open the call setup assistant” and follow the instructions on the left window.
C. Windows Live Messenger:
  1. After you start Windows Live Messenger, expand the view by clicking on the square on top left next to the red X.
  2. Then on the Windows Live messenger window on the right side, click on “ “Show Menus.” And then click on “Show the Menu Bar”.
  3. Next go to the Menu Bar on right side, click on “ “Action.”
  4. Go to “TOOLS” and click “Audio and Video Setting” and follow the instructions.
NOTE: You audio and video should work. Enjoy.
When done both the Audio and Video will function properly so you can chat and see family or friends you are connected to.
Hope this helps. Bud

Paper Size Error

Hi there check that the printer properties have not been changed.

  • Click Start
  • Select Printers and Faxes
  • Right hand click on printer icon
  • Select Printing preferences
  • Check that the paper size matches that you have got in the tray
  • OK and exit and test
If the above doesn't work try the following

  • Open MS Word
  • Open the document that you are having problems with
  • Click File
  • Select Page Setup
  • Check that Paper Size is correct
  • OK close and test.
This is normally a driver issue as the paper tray on the printer doesn't know what size paper is in it until you tell it from the driver.

Hope this works for you
Thanks J

Margin problem

Problem---Printer prints email on the very edge of the paper and leaves off the first 3 letters of every word down the edge of that margin. If you have Windows Live Mail forget trying to fix it from there. Clicking File will not give you the page setup option you are looking for. Go to the bottom of the screen, click "all programs", look for and click "Internet Explorer", click File, click "page setup". A screen comes up in which you can change the margins. The left margin is probably set on .25. Change it to .75. Okay. Go back and run a test email.
