Few options.
A) Restore Point - Sometimes you can do a simple System Restore. click start/all programs/accessories/system tools/system restore then click back on the calender to the very first restore point for me its the first day of my reformat (done it a few times) so anytime i have a really bad problem and i don't have any backup i go back to this restore point.
B) repair - insert your Operating system cd (windows xp, Vista, etc) and restart or turn on the computer. your cd should automaticly start up first. click the repair function and follow directions.
C) reformat - same as above except you pick install windows.... and follow directions. this is worst case senario if you don't care to lose EVERYTHING.
remember as soon as you open the box and turn computer on make a restore point. BACK UP at least once month EVERYTHING that is important. also a full system back up is awsome if you need to do this agin.
