Question about Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-F717 Digital Camera

1 Answer

DSC-F717 won't turn on

I've had a CyberShot DSC-F717 for about 5 years, and just today I noticed that it won't turn on. Nothing happens when I toggle the power switch, it just stays black. However, when I plug in the charger, the orange charging "lightning bolt" stays on. Curious. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've also just noticed that the camera DOES turn on when plugged in. I can then unplug it and it dies shortly afterward. I suspect the battery no longer holds a charge, and consider the problem solved.

You are correct. The battery has lost it`s life.

Contact your nearest Sony dealer and ask them for the NP-F50 battery which I think your camera uses.

The reason why the battery still shows it is charging ( if your interested ) is due to the sensing cct - you will see your battery has three poles and not just 2. The sensing pin is faulty due to the buildt in PCB having a problem. The batteries probably are still ok inside, but the sensing cct does the actual charge control.

Best of luck.

There is nothing visible though the lens, even though it seems as though everything is working and nothing happens on the screen - no picture

This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Sony should fix this for you for free. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following link for more info:

DSC-F717 autofocus stops working

I was first going to also suggest a reset. Does your manual focus function correctly from near to far(turning the focus ring in manual) and does the wide to tele motion function fully and smoothly? (lens adjustability without restriction) Was your camera exposed to extreme heat or elements?(beach sand or water of any kind) It may mean electronics only or a mechanical restriction causing an electronic malfunction. A last resort may mean your closer documenting when or how frequent it happens and maybe ultimately a trip (for your camera) to Sony. Get a price quote for repair since you might strike a happy medium of using the camera differently (manually focussing) without exceeding the value of the camera for repair costs.
