I'm trying to play commercial DVDs that I have successfully played many times before. I have tried several with the same results.

I am also using the same blank media (from the same spindle) that I have used successfully before. So I don't believe media is the problem.

Also, in case the cause was dirt, I have used a Kensington CD drive cleaner after the problem occurred, with no change in the results.

Hello s0miller,
Make sure the DVD media you are using is compatible with your Burner/Player, such as DVD-R and not DVD+R or RW. You may also want to note the Brand of media as I have experienced compatibility/readability issues related to specific Brands of Disk (Quality in manufacturing can cause problems with certain Burners/Players).
Some feedback on Brand and type of media you are having issue with, make and model of your machine, and prior successes also, would help?
Good luck,
TampaNative

I own the LG DVD Recorder/Video Cassette Recorder (model LGXBR446). The problem I am encountering is, it plays some DVDs but on others I keep getting "Unknown disk, please, check disk again"...

Hello ethiosoft,

Welcome, and thank you for using FixYa!

I would start with a DVD cleaner kit for the player. Chances are, if the drive worked before, then it will again; after being cleaned.
If the issue persists, then the DVD drive is failing. Chances are at that point, it would be cheaper to replace the entire unit then just the DVD drive.

Have a great day!

Dvd drive dose not recognise any dvds i put in it keeps saying unknown disc

If your unit is older the optical pick up lens may be dirty or has gone bad. Most Philips units are exchange items only, meaning they replace it under warranty instead of fixing it, if its out of warranty there usually are no parts or service information on them. Philips was bought be Funai and is not the company it used to be. Check if the unit will play a audio CD, if it does the pickup assembly is bad, some will play a CD but not a DVD. You may be able to clean the p/u lens with alcohol and a Q-tip. The lens is under the clamp that holds the disc while spinning.

My DVD recorder won't play my CDs

Recently purchased a unit... You can imagine the joy when I found in Manual: Audio discs can only play if in .mpg or .wma formats! Yes, all the bells and whistles except the most basic of functions such as all common audio formats. Other portable $99 dvd player works with them.

My dvd always shows "system error" and won't play commercial copyright dvds, only recorded ones.

I had the same problem with my recorder except that it wouldnt play any discs at all.. I finally unplugged the recorder and left it unplugged for 16 hours. Now it is fine. I am not getting any error messages.
