well...the reason its sooo hard is that this modulator is not intended for this use. its used for BIG jobs. you can normally do what you want with a simple rf modulator you buy at walmart or radio shack as it has a cable in and cable out, but
You dont even need a rf modulator.
The VCR can do it for free simply; hook the yellow , white if your vcr has red as well (depending on how old )...BOTH or all Three color to color from VCR(INPUT) to DVD
then use a piece of coax cable from the vcr out to tv.
test vcr by making sure that it work on either channel 3 - or 4 on tv. (leave VCR on)
Then to test your DVD connection first turn DVD player on.;.Then on front of VCR press channel down ON VCR until it says L1 or L2 this is under channel 2 when channel downing.
you should now see the dvd player on screen on either L1 or L2 depending on vcr.
now buy doing this your vcr must be on the L1 (L2) anytime you watch a dvd but when you want to watch a tape you just put it in and press play since TV itself is never changed.
when you want to go back to dvd,...stop tape and should still be right on the L1 or L2 again.
Leave the cable box powered on but disconnected from the TV or VCR. All other components should be disconnected and unplugged, giving clear and easy access to all connections. If components sit in an entertainment unit, make sure all A/V cables can reach the RF modulator and the cable from the modulator can easily reach the television.
Hookup the first coaxial cable from cable box output, usually labeled "TV," "TV out" or "Out to TV" to the cable "In" on the VCR. Connect the second coaxial cable from the VCR's out to "TV" to the coaxial input on the RF Modulator.
Connect the third coax cable from the coaxial cable "Out" jack on the RF Modulator to the coax cable "Input" on the television.
Take one A/V cable, connect the red (right audio channel,) white (left audio channel) and yellow (video) from DVD player's "Output," to the corresponding DVD "inputs" on the RF Modulator. Place components as desired but still disconnected from power. Plug in all power cables including the RF Modulator's into the surge protected outlet strip.
Make sure the Channel select switch usually found on the back of the VCR and the Channel select switch on the RF Modulator are both set to Channel 3. This channel is used on the television to view your components.
Turn on the power strip and turn on the TV. Cable reception should come on as usual. Set the TV to Channel 3 and turn on the VCR. With VCR on test it by playing a video tape. The RF Modulator should sense the signal and automatically switch to "VCR."
Switch off the VCR and with the television still on channel 3, turn on the DVD player. As the RF Modulator senses the DVD player signal and switches to DVD, its welcome screen should be seen on the television. Play a DVD to test and once you're done with the DVD turn it off and the cable should come back on.
The RF modulator sends on a certain frequernzy(Channel) usally around channel 36 on UHF. If there is a adjustmen screw on it try and turn it util the picture disapears and then search for it on the tv again just to make sure nothing else is interfearing on the channel the RF modulator is sending on now.
An alternative if there is no adjustment on your RF modulator would be to change the frequenzy on your VCR or other devices attached to your TV that might send on the same frequenzy as your RF modulator.
Initially, the only reason you would need/use a modulator is when the DVD/VCR has no RF OUT and the Quasar TV has no Audio/Video IN. If this were the case, then connections would be:
yellow Video Out of DVD/VCD to yellow Video IN of modulator;
red/white Audio Out of DVD/VCR to red/white Audio In of modulator;
modulator RF Out to RF/ANT/CABLE IN of the Quasar;
TV has to be set to either Channel 3 or 4;
if Modulator has no RF OUT but instead has a small antenna, still the TV has to be set to either Channel 3 or 4.
If however, the DVD/VCR has an RF OUT, then a coaxial patch cord from this could be connected to the RF/ANT/CABLE IN of the Quasar. The TV has to be set to either Channel 3 or 4. There would be no need for the modulator.
Do you have the red, white and yellow hookups on the back of your TV????? If you don't then you need to get an RF Modulator. You can buy one at Walmart. Older TVs don't have the red, white and yellow hookups. You hook up the RF modulator with a short cable to the cable outlet on your TV. Then you plug in your DVD player to the RF modulator. You also plug your cable for the TV into the RF modulator. It really is very simple. Directions are included with the RF modulator. You will need a short piece of cable also.
The RF modulator probably had a red, white, yellow trio of RCA jacks (A/V jacks), a coax jack marked "antenna" and another coax jack marked "TV"
Putting the DVD output to the A/V jacks allowed it to play out to the TV, which couldn't otherwise accept the DVD player.
The satellite box probably has coax and a/v jacks as output. Use the coax as output to the antenna input of the RF modulator, and the A/V jacks of the DVD player to the A/V jacks of the RF modulator. Hopefully the modulator allows the A/V jacks to have priority over the coax input, so that when the DVD plays it "wins"
