Switch on the camera take a photo then its necessary to switch off the camera before I can take another photo

i'm having the same problem--the light beside AF (not sure what that stands for/means!) is green, and i can't use any of the other functions on the camera except to take a straight picture with flash, then once i take a pic it won't take any more pics, but the other functions can be used (looking at pics, going through the menu, etc.)
