Cannot get any sound from my Dimension 3100

Hi guys,
I'm probably being really silly, but are there "built-in" speakers with this computer? If there is, I'm not getting any sound apart from the generic beep when an error message comes up or similar. Or do I have to buy separate speakers? I don't think so as I looked up the make generally and it said under specification that there were two speakers.
I'm confused...:(
Can anyone help me?

    Okay ...

Firstly, thanks a lot mate for coming back to me so quickly.

I probably seem like an idiot - but its not my machine you see, my other-halfs and he's away right now. I wanted to run some language software - a CD, and Im not getting sound.

    I see.

Well we got it from Dell directly. At the back of the monitor it looks as if the speakers might be there - there's sort of open venting, and it sort of looks as if it could "house" speakers.

How would I got about connecting the sound output from the box to the monitor as you suggest? Maybe I'll have a crack at doing that, if they are indeed there I guess I'll find out by doing that, one way or the other.

What a great website, and thanks again for your help and support. ...

Oh Okay, I see ... well I guess that would make sense, being that if the speakers were there at all they'd be blatantly obvious!

I'll have to go and buy some speakers then ... cheers

    Thanks a lot to everyone

The green is for speakers to plug in 2.1 speakers.
On the front above power button to the left is headphone socket.

Techfobe 30, Sorry but your monitor did not come with speakers. If it did there would be speakers on either side of the monitor, not mounted in tha rear of the monitor.

Your sound card is intergrated into the 3100 mainborard. You'll need to buy a set of speakers & plug them into the sound jack in the back of the 3100.

Speakers are not built into the box itself. They may be in the monitor, or completely separate.

Did you get this directly from Dell, or from a third party. Dell would have shipped you speakers with it, or a monitor with speakers built-in. Purchased from a third-party you might just get the box itself.

If you have a monitor with speakers, you still have to connect the sound output from the box to the monitor.

If the monitor houses speakers, then it should have an "audio input" 3.5mm socket. (This should look a lot like the earbud socket you would see on an iPod or Walkman.) It is possible that there is instead a pair of RCA sockets (one red, one white), like you would see on the back of a stereo.

On the back of the computer, there will be an "audio output" socket (the 3.5mm type again, not likely to be RCA here). In modern audio cards the 3.5mm sockets are color coded, the main "out" will be a light green.

You will need either a 3.5mm-to-3.5mm stereo cable, or a 3.5mm to RCA pair cable depending upon the type of connection on the monitor. If you did not get such a cable, you can get one at Radio Shack.

If your computer is connected to the monitor audio input and you still hear no sound, first check the volume setting on the monitor. If that doesn't work you may need a driver.

Here is a link to "About Your Dell™ Dimension™ 3100/E310 Computer" which will show you where the audio output socket can be found:

You can also enter the "service tag" for your computer on the Dell site and have it tell you exactly what soundcard your box (originally) had.

The green port on the back of your computer is for small speakers, this is the one mostly used. If you have subwoofer connect it to the orange port. The black port is used if you have surround speakers. The white port is for side surround speaker.
This is the integrated or built in sound card. If you have add on sound card then you need to use that instead. You can get the manual of your computer by clicking on this link.

Best Audio Jack/Output socket

In the back of your computer there should be a light green colored port that looks like a headphone jack, but If you could tell me the model of speakers you have I might be able to better assist you, but that green port is a generic speaker port.

No sound from my dell 3100 exsternal speakers are working.

Hi there.
On the computer look at the bottom right hand side of the screen, click on the speaker icon and see if there are any sound devices installed on the computer. If there is make sure it not on mute and that its at 100%, then play a tune.
plug the main speaker jack into the green port at the back of the computer, if its not the green one try the others too.
If there is no driver installed post back.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

I have a Dell Dimension 3100 and there is no sound. the drivers have been re-installed twice. Help!

If the little speaker icon appears on the taskbar by the clock verify that it is not muted and that the volume slider is up. Connect headphones or earbuds to the front headphone jack and see if you have sound there. If so then verify your speakers are plugged in the back of the PC (green jack) and they are plugged in to AC power (if powered) and that they are on.
