Question about Computers & Internet

My laptop is relatively new and I had it on hibernation while I was at a meeting. My toshiba was working fine when I got back and then all of a sudden it shut down. It won't restart, the screen is blank, and it seems frozen.

Press and hold the power switch for about 10 seconds. This should force a power-off. Then try to power it up again. Make sure you are plugged into the wall power, in case the battery is dead.

How did you install Ubuntu? Using a Live CD I presume. If you were able to boot from the CD-Rom and run the Linux installation either as a demo or a physical installation then the CD-Rom drive is working. It should be able to boot from a Windows recovery CD and run the Windows installation program. There is no problem with the drivers because Ubuntu has its own drivers. Maybe the firmware of the Drive, but I doubt it. Since your hard drive is brand new (scrubbed) you have nothing to lose by physically installing Ubuntu and playing with it to verify the hardware and possibly to update the firmware of the CD-Rom drive. When choosing the Ubuntu distribution do not use one with a version number higher than 12.04 LTS. I could not install version 12.10 on an old tablet PC for some hardware reason: The Ubuntu part was not working but KDE was fine.
When installing Ubuntu install grub on the C: drive. It will be wiped anyway when you reinstall Windows.
Good Luck.

My Emachines computer switches on fine but the screen goes into hibernation mode and says "no Signal" as if the base unit isn't switched on (but it is). It's only 2 years old and has a Acer...

Hi there,
If the machine switches on fine then it means it passed the POST process. try to unplug it from the outlet and press and hold the power button for about 20 sec to drain the flea power see if that will take the computer out of hibernation. If that doesn't work you might have to reseat the memory from it's place.
I don't think there's something wrong with the screen the fact that it displays No Signal tells that the screen is active but gets no Valid signal from the tower.
Hope this helps!

Delay in Monitor display once the system goes in sleep mode

Instead of sleep mode, tyr hibernate. It is generally faster except the whole computer shuts down. When you power back up, you're exactly where you were. Mine takes about 30 seconds.

My acer computer will turn on but wont come out of hibination mode

Some laptops have issues with Windows XPs hibernation mode. To get the computer back up again you should just hold the power button down until it shuts off completely. Some laptops won’t shut off even if you do this. When this happens you have to take the battery out to get it to turn off. Make sure it is not plugged into the wall when you do this otherwise it wont work.

Once you get the computer back running again you may want to disable hibernation if it seems like its going to keep happening. Go to Start, Settings Control Panel or Start, Control Panel and go to the Power Options icon. Change the hibernation section to never. You may want to try standby as an alternative. Standby saves all your running applications and documents into RAM while hibernate saves them to the hard drive. Hibernate uses less power from your battery, but it will take you considerably longer to get the computer back up. If you always plug the computer in then you may want to disable standby and hibernate since you really dint need them while plugged in.

Let me know if this works.

I put my laptop in hibernation mode and I can't get it to come back on. What do I need to do?

Hi sbrinke594,

Power down your laptop by pressing down the power button for about 5-10 seconds. Wait about 20 seconds before powering it on. Once you power it on, right click on an empty space on the desktop and choose properties, next click on "Screen Saver" tab, click on "Power" button, then click on t he "Hibernate" tab and uncheck the box for "Enable Hibernation".

This should help and good luck.

Using Hibernate uses lots of disk space, be sure you got atleast 20GB of free disk space on your hardisk when using Hibernate, also use surface disk checking software to see if you got badsector on your disk.

Yes, WinXP's relationship with your laptop's drivers has gone sour, like Pet Sematary. Bury your laptop...no wait, just reload the laptop's drivers (Dell or Toshiba or whatever) so hibernate works correctly...or un-fiddle with any hibernate/sleep/low-power utilities you use. Alternately consider that your laptop's reading signals from the battery or a cooling fan; telling XP or the BIOS that component is not in tolerable condition, and thus shutting down.

Have your feet rolfed while you fix that situation up.
