Strange screen colours
My tv picture has gone mainly blue in the centre of the screen, with an outer greeny red ring

- It happened suddenly. I turned it on after it had been turned off at the mains for a couple of hours and it was like this. I rotated the tv through 90 degrees to know effect. I turned in off at the tv power switch for a couple of hours today but left it on at the mains and some normal colour had returned to the centre of the screen and the blue is now the outer ringMar 06, 2008
- Thanks for the help. Should I have the tv on or off whilst passing the magnet over it. I could only find a small magnet and tried it with tv on and the colour is almost normal as the magnet passes but returns to the blue although the blue is now at the sides of the screen as apposed to a circular ring.Mar 06, 2008
- Thanks again. Found a bigger magnet and tried it out. Much more dramatic results. Picture not perfect but much improved. I have a large stereo speaker about 18" from the tv - could this have caused the problem in the first place even though the picture messed up only yesterday and they have been in this configuration for over a year?Clarification Request

Did this happen suddenly, or did it progressivly get worse over time?
Do the colors shift (slightly) if you turn the TV 90 degrees or move it to another location?

- TV has the same circle in the middle, with wild yellow, green and pink colours. Have turned it off at the mains a few times, to no avail. Tried magnet trick, but colours just spread out to the sides. This started out of the blue a week ago (when the weather turned really cold), tv is only 4 years old? Help!- GuestJan 21, 2009
- my tv screen has over a period of time started seeping blue green at one side and red at the other. the tv has two inbuild speakers on the side of the screen. can anyone help me sort it as its not that old but out of warranty now- anita11s

Your degaussing circuit is not fully 'demagnetizing' the picture tube.
You can manually degauss it using a strong magnet, but it's tricky.
With a tool made for demagnetizing you simply hold it close to the center of the picture tube and using a circular motion slowly spiral outward to the outer edge of the tube, pulling the magent further away from the tube at the same time. The same can be done using a strong magnet although the results may not be perfect. You can experiment with a magnet using wiping motions as you bring the magnet closer to and further away from the tube.
Have it on while degausing, and definately yes to the speaker causing, or being part of the problem. The magnetic field from large speakers, fluorescent light ballasts, neon sign transformers etc. can cause the discoloration due to the magnetic interference. You may possibly be able to talk a local tv shop into borrowing a degausser if they have one. If you do get a degausser do not run it for more than the few seconds it takes to do the job as it will heatup and burn out.
Believe it or not, even the earths magnetic field can alter the tubes colors. Thats why I asked you to turn it 90 degrees, to get it out of phase with the natural mag. field of the earth.
