I have a samsung combo drive which is some 2 to 3 yrs old , After some days passed it stopped detecting some dvd s , i thought that there may be some region difference in dvd so it is not detecting... As after some days passed it stopped detecting all dvd s but it was still detecting cd s and writing the cds,.. as some days passed it stopped detecting cds also... but the drive was detected by the OS & in BIOS(but it was able to run cds, dvds in windows 98)(actually i was having multiple OS).. after some days i was only having XP the drive was not detecting in OS, i reinstalled OS everything but also not improvements (but it was detecting in bios) ,... i then opened & just cleaned the lens everything & just did some thing now it is detecting in OS but it cant detect any cd,dvd & it cant write also .. some one give the solution for this to fix for myself ...
The first thing you shouldnt do is to open the Drive ! If you open it and clean the lens.. That is BAD NEWS buddy. You can open it, BUT DO NOT TOUCH THE LENS OR CLEAN THE LENS. Because the lens is very super sensative. Our hands has oil which is hard to notice.
I need to know what type of dvd drive you have...
Here are some tips which you can try :
a) There can be a problem with OS you are using. Try differnet ones. b) There can be a volt powering problem with your power supply to your DVD combo Drive. c) You might not have the installation drivers for your dvd drive, install them, you can find the drivers in the DVD webpage.

Right–click My Computer, click Manage, and then click Device Manager. make sure there are no yellow or red boxes in the left. if it is rede or yellow, right click and update drivers. If this doesn't work, turn your computer off then unplug. Open the case and re-seat the cables. Plug system in, and turn on. If you can't see the drive still under my computer you will need a new drive.
Your Lense has some issue.
You can clean your lense with disk cleaner disk.
Pur chase it from nearest shop it is called "Lense cleaner disk"
then put it into combo drive then play it then it clean your lense then check .
If still not access your dvd then if it is in warrenty go to service shop they replaced it.
And if it is not in warrenty then you should need to repair your lense or purchase new lense.
Try to use another DVD. you told you tried you old DVD from your toshiba. maybe is not compatible.. try in another.. then use your DVD in another laptop if the same from problem.check your board and DVD connection...if this under warranty bring to warranty..
if in Bios also can not detect this is hardware problem...
Hi, First i need you to make sure that both the BIOS and the WINDOWS is detecting your drive as 'combo' drive. If not, your drive is not combo, it is CD drive only. Because both rely on the product ID that is built into the Drive.
If u are confirmed of the fact that your drive is COMBO, then the problem might be with the laser. Combo drives use separate laser beams for DVD and CD operations, and
it's possible for one (either one) to fail while the other is still
working. But it's more common for the DVD to fail while the CD still works. You need to contact the service center with your drive ,if that is the case. Hope my info is useful. Bye....
if you are good at opening then open the combo drive and clean the lens once by using some lens cleaner solution and then refit it it should work ...
if you still persist the problem then think that the life of the combo drive is getting down and the time to purchase new one is getting nearer ..
after some days your combo drive will fail to read the cds but it will read occasionally for some days after that it will not read anything that s because the lens is becoming weaker ...
at the cost of replacing the lens you can purchase the new dvd writer ...
but also try cleaning the lens with some lens cleaner solution after that it may work for some days ..
the only problem with the combo drive is the lens will be weaker than the normal dvd writer or cd writer so after some days of usage it fails to detect dvds followed by it fails in detecting of cds too ...
you will have to open this unit up, sounds as thought the units slider has passed the spring sensor.
with the unit open manually open the tray, there should be a spring lock release on the right with it upside down facing you. slide the tray all the way back in until you hear it click and lock.
You may want to do this several times to make sure no plastic pieces have broken off.
If you see or find a piece come out then achances are the spring lock mechanism has snapped, not uncommon on this drive.
The screws are easily located on the bottom.
When it comes to installing a new driver you have to make sure is supported by your PC, that said it may be that you need an installation CD, if the driver does not come whit one try to download it from the website of the manufacturer. another solution can be that your driver may be conflicting with another driver, this means that your problem driver needs to be a master or slave check on the installation manual that came with the driver. Try this
Assuming you have tried different makes of cd or dvd disks, it's a classic drive failure problem where the laser can no longer burn or read dvd's, but may still be able to read cd's only.
You will have to replace the drive, they are quite inexpensive, and very easy to fit.
