Question about Philips DVDR985 DVD Recorder

1 Answer

Repairing DVDR985 Is my DVDR985 worth fixing? This unit failed within the first year and was sent to Houston for repairs. The repairs didn't last and when the warranty expired, Philips could care less. With nearly $500 invested in this dust collector, is there any chance this unit can be fixed economically?

Thanks for the prompt reply. After discussing the problem with a Philips rep., Philips decided to send me an exchange unit for no charge other than my paying for the shipment.

I have a Sony DAV C500 dvd player and it is unable to eject the discs that are in the system. There are presently 5 dvds in the player. The motor whirrs for a bit and then slowly quiets down with no...

Because it is a multi-disc DVD player, as opposed to a single disc type, and because discs are trapped inside, it may be worth submission to an authorised SONY service centre, obtaining a repair quote (and a second opinion as to whether it is economical to fix or not) - this allows you to decide on a further course of action.

Since you are concerned the surround sound cabling that you have may not be compatible with a new player, consider trying to get this one repaired first - but only if you agree to the quoted costs by qualified service technicians.

It might not be a good idea to try to retrieve the DVDs from the unit yourself; let a technician do it professionally as part of the overall repairs (make sure you get all the trapped discs back with the unit after repair completion).

Multi-disc DVD players are generally more likely to be worth repairing than single disc units. Up to you what you decide to do, but bear in mind, it could be expensive, but not unfixable.

The good news is this unit is repairable - just keep the workshop labour costs in mind.

My Panasonic DMR-ES30V only 5 years old and according to Comet needs a new power supply unit but they are unable to obtain one this unit has previously worked without problem where can I obtain a...

You may be able to obtain a used working power supply sub-board for this model from various secondhand stores, eBay (as a complete combo with a different fault or working), resellers, or you can try getting a refurbished one somewhere. As for Comet, they are no help to you - get a second opinion from Panasonic directly - see if they can exchange the board for you - worth asking them.

If however, you fail completely, and cannot get a board anywhere, or even the old one repaired (which isn't economical), you may need to consider replacing the whole unit - but only as a last resort (the unit is a 2004 model so it's over 6 years old.

My Panasonic DVD S35 reads "No Disc"

This means that it's time to get a new player; the laser head has failed. This eventually happens to many older optical drive devices like dvd and cd players and now that new ones are so cheap it's simply not worth repairing.

Your model is around six to seven years old now, so it's lasted well and spares are likely to be difficult to obtain.

It may interest you to know that if your dvd remote is still in good condition and fully functional, there's normally a ready market for them on auction websites. A good clean one could easily pay half of the cost of a new £30 dvd player.

Sorry there's no fix, but I hope that you have found my reply to be of some use. If so, please take a moment to rate my answer.

I have a magnavox dvd vcr combo mwd2205 The dvd

No solution just the exact same problem:
Does anyone know how to fix the DVD motor? I bought this from Walmart a few years ago and after about 1-2 yrs that was the 1st thing that went on it. The VHS still plays fine. I got tired of trying to "clean" it and its been packed away for at least 2 yrs. I recenly dug it out of the closet but of course its out of warranty. Is it worth repairing (its virtually brand new) or just get something else? Thanks for any suggestions in advance.

Old TV and old DVD player

Make sure your TV is "tuned" to the proper input. To change the input, change the TVs channel below 02, find the "input" dialoge on the tv's menu, or press the "input" or "video" button on the TV or Remote.

Repairing a 20 year old VCR (By chance a BetaMax?) is not worth your time. Replace it with a $60 DVD/VHS combo unit.

Insignia NS-7PDVD portable DVD player - no picture

The unit is failing and is not worth repairing. There is either a short in the wiring that leads to the screen, the inverter board os failing, or the decoder is failing. These are all hardware problems.

There are several tests to find where the problem may be, but the average consumer doesn't have the ability or access to parts to fix these issues.
