    How do I check this

  • leesalouski Mar 05, 2008

I have it plugged into the wall. It's not hooked to a computer. I've just been using it for a copier.

  • leesalouski Mar 05, 2008

Is there something I can do with the scanner, to check it? Is there a diagram I can follow or something I can do?

  • leesalouski Mar 05, 2008

OK I did as you said and reset the machine..it restarted and gave the "bulb warming" display...as I waited it was making a funny sound...the best I can describe it is a deep creeking...like it was trying to move something that wouldn't move. Then the same error message came up again " scanner error turn off turn on"

  • leesalouski Mar 05, 2008

tried this, no spots or breakage on the scanner bulb, when I turn it on and open the lid to watch the bulb it seems to be fine, just the sound of when it's moving that doesn't sound right

  • leesalouski Mar 05, 2008

I'm not sure how to do a filmware upgrade??

  • leesalouski Mar 05, 2008

yes the bulb seems to work fine, no spots, good and white all the way across...just the funny sound ( like a mechanical grunt??) right before the error message comes on...I tried to pull it apart and pull the scanner clear over to the left and then restart...it just slowly works it's way to the right, fully lit, and when it goes clear to the right it makes the grunting sound and the scanner error message shows up

To try to bring the scanner carriage back to its home position try this:

Unplug the power from the unit, plug the power back in, wait until the unit reads " Scanner Bulb Warming Up" Unplug the power. Repeat this cycle 5 times (or more).
This will hopefully bring the scanner assembly back to its home position.

Also make sure the power comming from the wall is good. Try a different outlet in another room. Try a reset too, unplug for 20 seconds. Press and hold the power button while to reinsert the power cord. Release the power button when the unit comes on. Otherwise either the carriage is stuck or the bulb is burnt. You could try to open the scanner and look for broken pieces or a stuck carriage, also look for black or brown spots on the bulb.

Good Luck!

HP has a trade up program, you may be able to get a discount on a new machine if you're willing to send this one to them and but the new one directly from HP.

  • Dean Joly
    Dean Joly Mar 05, 2008

Then it would seem as if the scanner carriage is stuck. Is there a moving lock on this machine??? If it's locked the carriage will not be able to move. Otherwise, you may want to open up the scanner and examine the motor, belt, and guides for blockages/broken pieces.

Your next option is to purchase a scanner assembly from the hp parts store.

I did some more reading and sometimes a firmware upgrade will fix this issue. The firmware is available here: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/Tec...

  • Dean Joly
    Dean Joly Mar 06, 2008

Sounds like the scanner doesn't know where to stop. Can you see a switch or sensor on the right side that would be activated by the scanner carriage when it reaches the end? Or is there an encoder strip like there is in the printer compartment? Could be the trailling cable connected to the carriage. Check to make sure these parts look OK.

From searching HP Partsurfer they only sell the scanner assembly as a whole and not the individual parts. The part number is Q2665-60116, I've seen it refurbished for under $100 and new for about $300. How much is this printer worth to you? Should be fairly straight forward to replace the entire assembly if you've already checked it out.

    Dean Joly Mar 06, 2008

Also sounds like it might be the motor, but again HP doesn't seem to sell it seperately.

Upgrading the firmware is really easy. Just download and run it. It will as which printer to upgrade, pick it in the list. Then click send firmware. Couldn't be easier!

Sounds like the Scanner Bulb is not getting to the aligment area. It is either stuck or teh glass getting dirty. if you cant restore the default problem, it is the scanner module to replace.

open the page of firware that i have sent,
This utility is for use on Windows 98SE, ME, NT4, 2000, XP, and Server 2003

Depending on the speed of your PC, the firmware update process may
complete on the printer, before the progress bar on the screen
completes. Once the update process has started, do not use your PC for
other activity until the process is complete.

    • Download the file to the desktop.

    • Save all work and close any open applications.

    • Turn the printer off and then back on to clear main printer memory.

    • Double click on the flash update utility file

    • Use the "Select the Printer to Update" dropdown control to
choose the printer you are updating. Note: Don't select the fax driver.

    • Click on the "Start" button to begin updating the firmware.

    • The progress bar will begin to move to the right indicating information being transferred.

    • DO NOT power cycle the printer or the PC during this process
or the printer may become unstable and or unusable without further
attention from HP . The firmware update can take up to 5 minutes to complete. Please be patient.

    • During the printer firmware update, the liquid crystal display
(LCD) on the printer control panel will display "Printing Document" and
will change to "Erasing". After a short while, the LCD display will
change to "Programming". After a short while, the LCD will display
"complete : )" and the "Ready" LED on the printer will be flashing. The
printer will automatically power cycle to reboot and will make noises
      similar to power on.

    • In the "LaserJet AiO Flash" window on the PC, a smiling face
will appear when the firmware update is complete and successful. Click
OK to close the "LaserJet AiO Flash" window.

Hi it sounds like the motor that moves the light under the glass is up the shoot how long have you had the printer

  • paul proctor Mar 05, 2008

The problem is as you have been only using it as a copier then the chances are the motor needs repalcing they are not really made to be used as copiers as such they are made to do the ocasional copy if its had alot of use as a copier then the problem will be either the motor or the runners jammed as its telling you scanner error that means that the scanner part of the printer has a fault usually the motor or even the runner has been over used causing the motor to jam.
This can be repaired but can be expensive probably as much as a new printer so its not really financially worth getting repaired.
Have you had the unit from new if so how old is it

  • paul proctor Mar 05, 2008

Hi does the bulb light up when its swithced on after factory reset

  • paul proctor Mar 12, 2008

Hi sorry have been offline for a while the chances are the problem is now something mechanical and more than likely out of your control the cost of getting repaired would be more than the printer as its probably the running gear and motor that needs replacing so i would be replacing it instead of repairing.

Power on the printer, wait around 15 seconds until the bulb assembly moves a bit to the left and the light goes on, then immediately power off.

Repeat the process around 15 times (or more) until the assembly has moved all the way to the left of the glass, and is located directly beneath the small glass on the left.

Remove the single screw that holds down the small glass.

Carefully remove the grey frame around the small glass.

Carefully remove the small glass.

Using a dry Q-tip, carefully insert it into the slot (to the left of the bulb) and clean the mirror. I found mine was coated with a layer of film, as if grease had accumulated over time.

Put everything back together.

Turn on the printer.

How do I solve the "scanner failure power off and on again" message for an h.p. 6110 officjet all-in-one printer/scanner/fax?

Hi Paul,

Scanner Failure usually results in Hardware Failure. However there is one step you can try. Try connecting the printer directly to wall outlet or any other power outlet and the issue should be resolved.

My cx3200's control panel reads scanner error. I unlocked the transportation lock, turned off, turned on. It stayed off for about 2 minutes then came right back on. While the error light was off tried to...

The only things that can cause a scanner error on this unit is a complete scanner harware failure or the scanner lock. With the unit on lock the transport lock and unlock it a few times quite forcibly. Then leave it in the unlocked position and power off and on again. If the light returns then at his point I think a new printer will be needed.

The error message reads: "Scanner failure. Turn power off the on again." When I do that, it just gives the same error message again.

You have a bad scanner unit. Getting it repaired will cost as much as buying a new machine.

My all-in-one printer A940 reads "error 50c" i have replaced both ink cartages what could b the problem?

Hi there Error 50c

Regarding the Dell A940 "Error 50c"....the user guide doesn't seem to mention "Error 50c". They do, however, mention a "Cartridge Error" on page 52 of the manual. They claim this means that the printer has detected a short circuit (fuse/resister) in the cartridge. As you may or may not have noticed in the manual, this is what they recommend doing about it:

1) Press Power to turn the printer off.

2) Lift the printer cover/lid (scanner unit) until the scanner support holds it open.

3) Turn the printer on.
The ink cartridge carrier moves and stops at the loading position unless the printer is busy.

4) Remove the color ink cartridge.

5) Lower the printer (scanner unit) until it is completely closed.
If the error message displays again, replace the black cartridge with a new black cartridge.

If the error message does not display, repeat steps 1–3 and then go to step 6.

6) Reinstall the color cartridge and remove the black ink cartridge.

7) Lower the printer (scanner unit) until it is completely closed.

If the error message displays again, replace the color cartridge with a new
color cartridge.
If there is no error message (indicated by flashing lights), repeat steps 1–3 and then reinstall both ink cartridges.
8) Lower the printer (scanner unit) until it is completely closed.

If you get the error message again, while both cartridges are installed, replace both of the cartridges.

Basically, what they want you to determine is,....if the short circuit is with the "black ink" cartridge or the "color ink" cartridge and then replace the cartridge that has the problem.

You may have to buy a new cartrige.
Please all I ask is call back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one, so I will keep on helping.

Unfortunately, if an HP scanner quits functioning, the whole unit is dead. You may want to unplug the printer from its power source and USB cable for about 5 minutes, plug them all back in and then retry. Sometimes, a scanner job can get stuck in the spooler and cause the whole thing to stop working until the job is done (even though there isn't a job to do). I had this issue once and this worked.
