Question about Akai PDP-5016H 50 in. HD-Ready Plasma Television
I have three Akai PDP-5016H 50" Plasma TV's and two of them have failed with the same problem. The screens are just grey. When powered on, the screen goes from black to grey and the fans work, but I cannot get anything on the screen. Not even the menu or the Input source. Power light goes to green like normal, just no picture.
I have looked at the caps on the board, but nothing looks bad.
Thank you for any help?
This unit stumped me.. The reason being is that the power supply normally has 2 parts, a primary control line and then the main power supply. The purpose of the primary control line is to talk to the main control board, make sure there are no errors upon power up and then startup the set with high voltage. The problem is that the primary control portion is not working.. With that being said, it has no way to control the set for startup and initalize the processor for the video/menu. What is supposed to happen is when this is dead, the set should do nothing and the relays should be tripped going into protection fault mode. A very backwords design for failure on this unit. Anyways, replace caps c502, c503 and c521 on the main power supply unit. Replace the existing 50v .47 uf with a 1uf @ 50v to prevent the failure again. The other 2 are 47yu at 35v, I would jump the volts to 50 on that again to make sure it dosent happen. Becareful of the ps removal, the 15+ fets are screwed to the chasis and locked down do to heat, do not remove the protective coating or risk ps failure. Enjoy your tv.

Check for blown capacitor on the power supply board. I was lucky to have an electronic store to find the part for me. Cost me < $5.00. I'm watching TV on my plasma again.

Check for short on 130Volt line. With the set unplugged clip the negative lead of your DMM to TP3 (Hot Gnd.) located on the Power Supply Panel. Connect the positive lead to TP7 (130 Volt source). Reading should be >100k. If a short is shown--and with test leads still connected--unplug P108. If still shorted, problem is on power supply panel. Check Q10, Q11 and D13. If unplugging P108 removes short, check for shorted Q10 and D14 on the deflection panel. Important!! Replacing either panel without following this procedure will short out the new panel installed. Often, both panels must be replaced at the same time to avoid one shorting out the other. This is the most common problem to tv that has sound but no picture.
