Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

1 Answer

Audio with Optical is mixed improperly

I just got a PS3 and have it hooked up to my sony receiver via monster optical cable. I can hear sound from all speakers but the mix is really bad and it seems like I am missing some channels. For instance, in Burnout Paradise, I hear a load of car engine noise, but the voice and music I can barely hear at all. In Drakes Fortune, in the opening sequence I can hear normal speech but when it is supposed to be through the female character's camera, you can't hear anything at all. There is also little to no ambient noise or music which seems odd given the jungle nature of the game. It may be my optical cable but I just want to see if anyone else has had this and what they did about it. Thanks!

PS3 surround sound

You will need the optical cable. My receiver only passes video through the hdmi. So I hooked up the HDMI cable to the tv, and the optical cable to the receiver. Once that is done you have to go to the audio settings for the PS3 and chose audio through the optical.

I have hooked up the PS3 to my TV with the component cable. The audio is connected to a Denon digital audio device using an optical cable. I cannot get the sound to work, even though I have set up the...

I can't give you the exact steps without knowing the model of Denon receiver you are using, but usually you need to go into the setup of the AV receiver or amp and tell it to associate the digital audio input # you've plugged the PS3 into with a specific 'source'. The optical inputs will be associated by default to CD or DVD or CBL, but you usually need to go into the amps setup to specify exactly how you want it to use it.

I hope that helps.

Hello,

Adjust the system's audio output settings. These settings are mainly used when the system is connected to audio devices that support digital audio output, such as AV amplifiers (receivers) for home entertainment systems.
1.
Confirm the formats supported by your audio device.
Settings vary depending on supported formats. For details, refer to the instructions supplied with the audio device.
2.
Select in_soundset.gif (Sound Settings) under in_setting.gif (Settings) in the home menu.
3.
Select [Audio Output Settings].
4.
Select the input connector on the audio device. Channel numbers and audio formats that are supported vary depending on the connector in use.

Select audio output formats.
Select all output formats that are supported by the audio device in use. If [Audio Input Connector / SCART / AV MULTI] is selected in step 4, the screen for selecting audio output formats will not be displayed. If [HDMI] is selected, you can also select to automatically set the audio output format. (In this case, the HDMI device must be turned on.)

Check your settings.
You can go back to the previous screen and revise the settings by pressing the in_left_key.gif button.

Save your settings.
The audio output settings are saved on the system.
Hints
  • [Linear PCM 2 Ch.] audio is set to be output from all output connectors by default. If you change the audio output settings, audio will be output only from the connectors that were set.
  • If you change the audio output settings, the system will no longer be able to output audio from multiple output connectors at the same time. For example, if your system is connected to a TV via an HDMI cable and to an audio device via a digital optical cable and you switch to [Digital Out (Optical)] under [Audio Output Settings], audio will no longer be output from the TV. To output audio from the TV, switch the setting to [HDMI], or select in_setting.gif (Settings) > in_soundset.gif (Sound Settings) > [Audio Multi-Output] and set the option to [On].
  • If you select [Linear PCM 2 Ch. 88.2 kHz] or [Linear PCM 2 Ch. 176.4 kHz] in step 5, sound may be intermittent or may not be emitted from some audio devices.
  • When using an HDMI cable, only [Linear PCM 2 Ch.] audio will be output from PlayStation®2 and PlayStation® format software. To output Dolby Digital or DTS audio, you must connect the PS3™ system and the audio device using a digital optical cable and switch to [Digital Out (Optical)] under [Audio Output Settings].
  • If a device that is not compatible with the HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) standard is connected to the system using an HDMI cable, video and/or audio cannot be output from the system.

Hope it helped.

The HTDDWG700 does not transfer the audio through the HDMI cable that the vision goes through. To solve the problem i got an optical cable and connected the PS3 to the receiver with the optical and put the HDMI cable from the PS3 to the tv.

You will need to tell the PS3 to use the optical cable for digital output in its setup, as well as tell your amp to use the optical cable as the input for whichever 'source' you wish to have associated with the PS3.

Does the end of the optical cable glow red when hooked up to your PS3 while the PS 3 is powered on? Look at it without the cable plugged into the STR-D845.

Optical sound problem

i have the same problem with the RZ-4900AV, it manifests itself when any video application runs through either the optical or coaxial input. in my case it's definitely not the optical cable itself, which works fine on another receiver. optical or coaxial input of audio CD's is fine, but a DVD video on the same DVD player gives the high pitched whine. the same with the PS2 on the optical input, audio CD in the PS2 no problem, PS2 game or DVD video gives the whine... i think, unfortunately, it's a crap receiver... and i solved the problem by buying a RZ-6900AV, which works perfectly in exactly the same environment.

Ps3 using digital optical and hdmi cables together

There is a conflict in the fact that HDMI gives you the digital surround sound without the need for the optical lead and when you allocate the optical for the sound thats when the conflict starts, you can only use one or the other.
