You can repair it your self. dont waste your money.
just remove the nuts from cover and remove 2 cables comming from the lens.then take the lens out and remove all the nuts attached to the lens.there are nuts in 3 colors red, silver and black.take out the motar and remove the lens cover carefully.
there are 2 springs in side.just fix them correctly and fix it again.
it has worked for me and save USD125. good luck if u need further help contact me on email@example.com

I just had the same problem. I checked my lems as it went in and out and lo and behold there was a baby fingerprint. Cleaned using a q tip and it stopped immeadiatley and works fine now! Thank goodness!

Before sending it away you may want to make sure your lens is clean. If it is dirty it will act as if the lens is out of focus. If that doesn't work and you want to repair it yourself. There is a guy in South Carolina who has lots of parts for all the Sony Cameras. I bought my LCD from him for $39.00 plus shipping and it works perfect. I put it in myself and saved a ton. If you buy the part from him he sends you pictures of him taking the camera apart so that you can repeat the process when you install it. I think his email is firstname.lastname@example.org

To get a little techincal - the focus stepper motor on the lens assy is not working correctly.
You will need to contact your nearest Sony dealer for directions to a service centre.
They will charge you for replacing the complete lens though, which should be about half of what you paid for the camera.
