Top third only of picture is distorted. It waves in and out and people look like aliens! Worth trying to fix?

It can be fixed (panel has faulted) but the cost is not really worth it.

Depending on how old it is, you could get it fixed under warranty or insurance.

Sounds like convergence problem. Fixing the problem requires removing, desoldering and soldering the convergence ICs.
The repair for this may go for a couple Hundred or more..

generally Samsung makes great units. but its definitely not worth fixing. recycle it and indvest in a new unit.

Color issues are harder to solve without seeing the problem. It sound like the red amplifier on the crt board is bad. Is there any red in the picture at all? If not, that will be you problem

By distortion do you mean that the top part is stretched? If so, you have bad caps in the vertical circuit. If you are comfortable working inside hte set and can solder, you can fix this yourself. Please post the model number and I can give you the details.

It looks like the STK chips need to be replace for fix the distorted colors.

do you happen to have any speakers of any size within about 3 feet in any direction of the tv?? move them if so, I have large speakers about 5 feet from my tv at home and i still get some distortion once in a while with red and dark green streaks.
