I am thinking of a new machine but the door of the room it's in .has to be made wider for a newer machine ...so if it's a relatively simple repair will do it myself .Any ideas as to the remedy and is it worth it .Thank You Angelx

The transmission is dead! It's not worth fixing! If it's 10 years old or more, better off replacing it with a newer machine which will be much more efficient!
1998???????????? Not worth the money to fix!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im sorry to say, it sounds like the transmission in the washer may have gone out, the unit it self sits at the bottem of the main agitator shaft under the the tub, you may be able to have this replaced, but shop around for the right price.
This machine does not use a belt. It has what is called a motor coupler between the motor and transmission. This is not the first place to check. I'd be looking at the lid switch first. This machine will not spin if the switch is faulty.
