how much quality do you want and if photo is small to start with and you are scanning it you will need 600 dpi or more where as a larger photo can use less 300 DPi as it is not being enlarged onto the screen / slide show
depends on what you intend storing the pictures on . BMP will take up a lot more memory than jpeg files. The dimension more refers to dots per square inch when scanning a photo .

On Windows, iTunes 4.7 (and higher) can recognize and prepare "JPG , JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIF, TIFF, and PNG" images from "Adobe Photoshop Album and Adobe Photoshop Elements" for display on the iPod photo/"Color" and iPod nano. However, in disk mode, you can copy any type of file to the iPod for transport to another computer.
