i have the red iLo red 2gb mp3 player recently, and it doesn't turn on when plugged into the PC. when unplugged from the PC it'll work just fine (minus the fact that the music on it sucks). when plugged into the usb port, it is not even recognized as a removable disk or whatever as the installation cd says it should.

1) Disconnect from computer, turn it off, hold in volume + button and reconnect it to your computer - continue holding volume + until the Found Hardware Wizard comes up.

2)
REFORMAT FOR WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER - Erases Everything: Connect your iLo player to the computer and open Windows Media Player. Click on the Sync tab. Pull down the drop down menu underneath the Sync tab by moving your cursor over the Sync tab and left clicking on the little black arrow underneath the Sync tab. Highlight "ILO 2GB" (wording may vary slightly), and then select "Format." - this should erase everything, and give you a fresh start.

I offered you the best solutions available for your piece of **** player, and you have the nerve to rank me inappropriate, you schmuck! As I have told others before, the "inappropriate" rating is designed for people who write "f--- you" or some childish gibberish. i at least offered a solution, that has been known to work with other mp3 players. you should have at least given me a "thanks for trying" sheeseh!

My freestyle player says format error how to fix?? it was working fine and then this error.

Hello there,

Q.: My player is having a DRM error / Format Error / Empty Disk Error
what do I do?
A: For all 3 errors, the first step is to attempt to reset the player, this can be accomplished by pressing the play and menu
buttons down together for approximately five seconds. If reset does nothing, make sure all the songs are .mp3s, if all songs
are .mp3s, attempt to format and re-sync the player.

if you need it

How do I convert my iTunes into MP3 format?
A: See Music Conversion Instruction Document: Transferring and Playing Music on Freestyle Audio mp3 players with
iTunes.

if you need to format the player here is how for MAC and windows.

Q.: What's Reformatting, How do I format my Player?
A: Reformatting your player basically wipes you player clean and deletes all songs, leaving you with a blank slate. Like
most removable drives you can reformat your player with no worries of damage to the unit. When reformatting on a Mac
make sure you choose the MS-DOS format style.
(CAUTION: FORMATTING WILL ERASE EVERTHING ON THE DRIVE)
PC (Windows NT, 9x, XP and Vista):
1. Plug in the Mp3 Player.
2. Put the Player in removable drive mode. Under "My Computer" you should
see the player as a removable drive.
3. Right click on the "removable drive" and a Drop down menu should appear.
4. In the menu select the option "format..."
5. Make sure that "FAT" is selected as the file system and that Allocation
Unit size is set to "Default Allocation Unit Size"
6. Now click format and wait, after it says format complete, you're done.
MAC OS 9 (and Earlier):
1. Plug the player in.
2. Put the player in removable drive mode.
3. Single-click the disk's icon on your desktop to format.
4. Pull down the "Special" menu from the top of the screen and select "Erase
Disk..."
5. Enter whatever name you want in the "Name:" field in the window that pops
up. If the disk is a hard drive, select "Mac OS Extended" from the
"Format:" pull down. If the disk is not a hard drive (such as a Zip Disk
or other removable media), select "MS-DOS or MAC OS Standard" for the
format.
6. Press "Erase." The drive will be formatted and ready to use.
MAC OS X (and later):
1. Start your computer and plug in the player in the USB port after the Mac
OS has completed loading.
2. Put the Player in removable drive mode.
3. An icon for a removable drive should appear for the flash drive on the
desktop.
4. From the Dock, open "Disk Utility".
5. Click "Erase" from the top selector (next to "First Aid")
6. Choose "MS DOS File System (FAT16)"
7. Click the "Erase" button
8. Perform the instructions given on the screen and finish the formatting.

if you need any help with a Step let me know and i hope this information was helpful don't forget to Rate .

Remove the battery. While this isn't necessary to get the player into recovery mode, it insures the unit will not power on before the cable is inserted. On the iLO, hold the "Power" button down while inserting the USB cable. Continue holding the power button down for 5 seconds more after the cable is inserted. The backlight on the iLO will remain off during this time, making the screen appear to be blank. An hourglass should appear on you computer and Windows should say, "Found new Hardware 'SMTP3500". Launch the Rave-MP firmware update program (Start>Programs>Rave-MP> Firmware) Click "Get Firmware". Select "iLO256" and let it download new firmware. Click "OK" when prompted. Click "Update Firmware". It will now search for the iLO. This may take a while depending on how corrupted the firmware is, so be patient. After it has found the iLO, it will say, "A device has been detected in recovery mode and is being initialized. Please wait." The iLO should come back to life and start showing it's glorious "USB Connected" screen. The "Firmware Update" window should appear. Select "Format Data Area" to rid the player of corrupted firmware data. And click "Start". It can take anywhere from 2 to 4 minutes to re-flash the iLO and the program might appear to have locked up, but it hasn't. So don't close the program or disconnect the iLO! Why are you still reading this? Great, did something happen? Well, If the program fails to find the iLO and gives you an error like, "Device Timeout" or something similar, you need to reinstall the iLO drivers. This can be done by inserting the iLO cable into a USB port it has never been plugged into before. Or you can reinstall the drivers by reinstalling the Rave-MP program. (Remove it, restart the computer, and then install it again). Plugging it into a new USB port is the fastest and easiest option though. Ilo is not functioning correctly

Make sure the hold/lock is not enagged.

There are two ways to format an Mp3 player - one on the computer itself, and one in Windows Media Player. Both methods will end up erasing all the songs on the player, but the player will be "good as new" after that. Sometimes reformatting in this manner will override the player's native formatting and cause problems - this can be reversed in most cases by updating the player's firmware. Firmware upgrades are available from most manufacturers' websites.

WARNING: The following procedures will erase all songs on the player.

Check if the file system is NTFS. If yes, format it to FAT or FAT32. - Connect player to computer, double-click my computer, right click on icon of mp3 player and select format. This only applies to Windows-based computers.
You can also format the player in Windows Media Player itself:
Connect your Mp3 player to the computer and open Windows Media Player. Click on the Sync tab. Pull down the drop down menu underneath the Sync tab by moving your cursor over the Sync tab and left clicking on the little black arrow underneath the Sync tab. Highlight "name of Mp3 player here 1GB" (wording may vary slightly), and then select "Format." - this should erase everything.
