Just clean it the disk cleaner, if not work
remove the cd/dvd drive into your pc then i have knowlegde how to repair it just open the casing and replace the belt in the gear then wipe the lens with clean cotton.
if not work i suggest you to buy a new cd/dvd drive because the lens of that cannot read.

I have an a710n needing a os, I cannot locate the original restore disc's . . . I do have oem XP software for my Dell (3) and have successfully wiped the drive and installed this Dell OEM XP OS. The...

This may work for you, but then again, it may not... Get your system up and running normally, don't boot from the OS Install disc. Once your system is on, place the OS Install disc into your optical drive.
As Auto-Run tries to initiate, Cancel the operation. Open up "Computer", right click your dvd-rom, and go to "explore" or "open". You will have to find a hidden text document with the title of "unattend". Inside that text document, you will find the OS Product Key for that particular disc. Try using that key for the Activation of your Windows OS.

How can i restore factory setting with my dell desktop xps400 9150 without media dvds

Most newer computer do not include any media disc for the purpose of restoration. This is for a couple reasons first it cuts down on the cost of the computer and second it cut down on piracy or in other words taking those media discs and installing them on another computer.

However Dell as well as many other computer manufactures use another method that will allow you to restore your computer back to the way it came out of the box.
At the end I included a couple links.
The first one is your "Owner's Manual". You can find all these steps in this manual as well.

The second are other documents relating to your xps400.

Good Luck and I hope this helps.

"Happy (insert preference here)" and "Merry New Year"

To restore your PC to factory settings:

Warning: Anything you added to your system after you purchased it will be deleted. The only way to recover those files and programs are to back them up. I would advise you to get some CD/DVDs and back everything up just to be on the safe side.

  1. Turn on you computer. During the boot process, a blue bar with appears at the top of the screen.
  2. Immediately upon seeing the blue bar, press <Ctrl><F11>. (If you do not press <Ctrl><F11> in time, let the computer finish starting, and then restart the computer again). If you do not want to proceed with PC Restore, click Reboot in the following step
  3. On the next screen that appears, click Restore.
  4. On the next screen, click Confirm. The restore process takes approximately 6–10 minutes to complete.
  5. When prompted, click Finish to reboot the computer. NOTE: Do not manually shut down the computer. Click Finish and let the computer completely reboot.
  6. When prompted, click Yes. The computer restarts. Because the computer is restored to its original operating state, the screens that appear, such as the End User License Agreement, are the same ones that appeared the first time the computer was turned on.
  7. Click Next. The System Restore screen appears and the computer restarts.
  8. After the computer restarts, click OK.

Having Trouble Reinstalling XP on my Dell Dimension 3000

Here's what I would do. Download and burn any Linux disk. Install Linux and delete all partitions while doing so. After that, initiate the Windows XP installation and see if that works.

This will take care of two things:

If you can install Linux, then the hard drive is good and the partition that was previously on there will be deleted (I suspect the partition is locked which can be caused by a virus or the software used to scrub hard drive).

Check your CDs for Windows (for scratches) or it could be your actual CD drive is out (laser) which would make the installation fail. If the CDrom cannot read the disk, it locks up like that during installation...even if it read before.

I need to do a complete reinstallation of the XP operating system on my Dell e310 , where can I purchase a cd to do this ?? I did not get a recovery disk when I purchased this unit .This means reformatting...

Hi there,

if you check in your start menu you may have a recovery option to create the discs, this is what newer computer do this days, or even better you may have a partitioned hard drive with the recovery unit ready to go, if so start the computer holding F12 and it will run you through this.

If not you can purchase them from Dell itself, and this will come with all the drivers ready to install and you will be ready to go with no messing about.

if you purchase a XP disc from a computer store it will cost you a bomb then you will have to download the drivers from the dell website.

hope this helps

Reformatting pc

what you need to do is put the XP cd in the cd or dvd drive first, then, when the pc is booting up press either F2 or Del depending on bios and the cmos setting screen will appear. Go to advanced cmos settings and the top line normal reads 'first boot device, this will be set at HDD or hard disk, this needs to be changed to cdrom. When you have changed it, save settings and exit, the system will now reboot and an option to boot from cd screen will appear, you then press Enter to boot from cd then follow the instructions to format or install windows.
