I know this is forever away, but I wanted the answer to be completed.
The black brush lead wire attaches to the foot switch. It probably got pulled out when the unit was disassembled. Look at the side of the switch and where the power cord connects, you'll see 2 holes. The black wire for the light goes in one hole, the black brush lead wire goes in the other.

the brush bar has 3 settings marked on the end of the plastic clips that hold the bar in place make sure it is set to no 2 both ends,lay machine down and start roll should spin also check bar is free to move by hand
This will require 2 phillips screwdrivers. Insert the screwdrivers into the screw heads and unscrew one side while holding the other so it will not turn. When the screw is out, tip the brush up and slide a new belt on.

Do you mean motor bearings or brush roll bearings?
brush roll bearings can be adjusted to lower the brush closer to the carpet when worn.
to do this remove the front brush assembly, there is usually a sticker below the belt hole showing RED = POSITION 1 HIGHEST (ie a new brush roll)
GREEN = POSITION 2 MIDDLE (brush part worn)
BLACK = POSITION 3 LOWEST (brush fully worn)
At each side of this there are 2 clips unlock these and remove the bottom cover.
Release the belt tension by rotating the belt release at the front.
Before removing the brush roll, at each end of the brush roll there is a grey plastic bearing carrier (Square at the ends) MARK this with a pen or marker just so you know the original position, also look closely for the coloured markings as indicated above or numbering 1,2 or 3.
If RED or "1" is showing you need to remove the brush roll by pulling it out and rotate the endcaps to Green or "2" and re-insert the brush roll, If Green or "2" is showing then rotate the endcaps to Black or "3" and re-insert.
If Black or "3" is showing then the brush roll is worn and cannot be adjusted any more, fit a new brush roll and insert with RED or "1" showing.
To re-attach the belt, move the belt to the middle of the roll and rotate the belt knob at the front ensuring the belt engages with the hook on the inside.
4 possible reasons. 1 – one or both bearings are worn so armature (rotating part) wobbles as it is spinning and cause motor brushes to wear fast. Solution – change bearings too. 2 – Whoever replaced brushes – did not use some brush seating sticks to make cmutator smother and contour brushes to the shape of the comutator (not likely). Solution – appropriately install new set of brushes. 3 – Comutator is so warped that seating sticks do not help anymore – solution – new armature or turn the old armature. 4 – The fact that ONLY ONE brush was worn may mean that there is something wrong with the brush or housing. Maybe it could not move freely within the housing? I think this may be most likely cause it it may be a combination of all 4.Is it worth to fix? Hmm depends how much will it be. If this is 100+ - I’d say get newer Kirby for 300 ad enjoy the tech drive (Heritage does not have tech drive so it is much harder to vacuum with than the newer models)
PROBLEM: THE KIRBY WILL NOT TURN ON AT ALL POSSIBLE CAUSES:
Please note......The Kirby has TWO safety switches that need to be engaged before it will operate. One is on the fan case in the front. It is activated by having an attachment attached to the front. (hose, power nozzle, etc.)
The other switch is on the side of the Kirby where the cloth bag attaches and is engaged by the little tab that sticks out from the side of the hard plastic cloth bag "boot". The bag boot MUST be completely engaged to activate the safety switch and allow the Kirby to power on. If you are having trouble getting the bag to properly engage, (sometimes they are STUBBORN) simply lubricate the black gasket that the boot fits onto with gasket lubricator, VASELINE, or try a tiny drop of DISHWASHING DETERGENT or HAND CREAM. It doesn't take much, so use the smallest amount possible to get the desired effect. You should hear a slight "pop" when the bag completely engages.
If neither of these things are indicated, it is probably again, either the power cord, switch or the carbon brushes.
If your Kirby is sparking there are a few causes...
PROBABLE CAUSE (MOTOR): Worn out carbon brushes, bad armature or perhaps BOTH PROBABLE CAUSE (CORD): The cord has a short in it. Replace the power cord PROBABLE CAUSE (POWER NOZZLE): There is something metallic stuck in the fan or power nozzle
I think you have a problem with the carbon brushes and amature because of where you describe seeing the sparks. I would suggest taking it to an authorized dealer for repair if it is the motor that is going bad.
Here is a online guide....it's for the G series Kirbys. They're similar enough that it should help. Pay special attention to the belt lifting process...it's exactly the same as for the Heritage II, and it's also where I think your problem lies. I have a Heritage II manual available too!
