Question about Sewing Machines
My Singer Capri had been 'got at' before I bought it second-hand.
It did not pick up the bobbin thread.
I have worked on it and now can pick up the bobbin thread but the zig-zag is wierd; there are loops on both sides of the cloth, one row on each side, as though the tension is not correct.
I would very much like to get the details for setting the bobbin-hook timing, please.
I am finding out about the mechanics of the machine when I really just wanted to make kites for the grandchildren [? & me].
You can search for sewing machine timing or take it for service.
HINT; when threading the top thread, ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot! This will allow the thread to seat completely in the tension disk.

As you stated, the machine had been 'got at' before you purchased it. Therefore you have no way of knowing What was actually done that may be causing your current difficulty.
Tension is a tricky thing with any machine, particularly one that has been 'adjusted' without the specifications.
Your best bet is to find a person who is experienced with older-style Singers. Most of the information for these is still in the hands of people who know and have worked on Singer machines for a long time.

Be sure TOP control shows zig-zag. Flip top right bar from red to black or black to red on side of machine facing you. You can then change the widths by changing the numbers on that same circle control.

Top tension about 4 or 5, make sure the presser foot is up when you theread the machine, make sure you can just pull the bobbin thread through with some slight resistence, if it is too tight slacken the screw on the bobbin case a quarter of a turn at a time anti clockwise.

Try pushing the reset button underneath the machine. Mine does that too. I had it repaired a few months ago...apparently it needs a circuit board that is no longer available.

There are manuals avilable online to purchase for the singer machines, SOrry I was not able to locate a site that has them for free.

More than likely you have a broken vertical shaft gear.
When you turn the handwheel you should see the sewing hook moving under the bobbin case.
If not, take it to a sewing repair person and it should cost somewhere around $100 to repair.
