Solve quadratic by graphing

  1. Write the equation as a function y= ax^2+bx+c.
  2. Press the Y= editor and type in the function after Y1= or Y2=.
  3. Once finished, press the GRAPH button.
  4. If you do not see the portions of interest (where y=0) use the ZOOM or WINDOWS features to Zoom in on the area where the function has zero value.
  5. After you re-frame the graph, [2nd][TRACE] to open the (CALC) menu options.
  6. Select the one that says Zeros.
  7. You will be asked to enter the left bound of the interval where the calculator will search for a root.
  8. Enter the left bound and press ENTER.
  9. You will be asked for the right bound.
  10. Move cursor to the right to be on the other side of the point where the function vanishes and press the ENTER button.
  11. You will be asked for an initial guess of the zero (root). Enter a value between the left bound and the right bound, and press ENTER.
  12. Wait for the calculator to return with one root.
  13. If the calculator does not find a zero, your interval is incorrect ( no zero in it) or the initial guess is too far from the root, or the interval is too large. Narrow it or change the initial guess.
  14. When you find the first root, move cursor along the graph to the neighborhood of the other root (if it exists) and restart the process.

After you have drawn your graph, press [2nd][TRACE] to access the (CALC) menu
In the above screen (on your calculator) press [3:minimum]
You will be promped for the lower bound of the domain where you think the minimum lies.
Notice the dark spot on the curve near the X axis: That is what the calculator suggests as a lower bound. Since it is rather close to the minimum you are well advised to select this as a lower bound. To accept it press [ENTER].
You are then prompted for the right bound. Be ready to move the cursor to the right side of the minimum. That is what I had to do to get the following screen. Notice the mark on the curve at X=4.7
Press [ENTER] to accept or type in a reasonable value.
The calculator prompts you for a guess. Enter a value that lies in the interval [left bound, right bound] and press [ENTER]

As you can see, I entered value X=3 and pressed [ENTER]
Here is the result. Enjoy

If you have to look for a maximum, the procedure is the same, except that at the begining of the search you select [4:maximum] on the first screen capture (see above.)
