Hi, Usually after you have installed a printer you would go to a program like Word, to type a document and then select print from the file menu or press the little button on the toolbar that looks like a printer. This would then cause your printer to print the document. The same goes from whatever application or program that you are working in. It is not really the normal thing to do to place an icon on your desktop to print as the printer will not know what you wish to print.
If you want to see the printer that you have installed on the system or look at settings for it and maybe print a test page you can view your printer in a couple of different ways depending on what the operating system is that you have on your computer.
Hopefully you have Windows XP and this will be correct. If not the directions will be quite similar though not exact. From the "START" button select "CONTROL PANEL" and when the window opens find "PRINTERS" etc and open it. Inside you should be able to see the printers that you have installed on the computer.
Let me know how you go and if you need any other assistance.

Im looking for an inexpensive all in one laser printer/copier for my co-op. It wont get very much use but i'd like it to be reliable and easy to use.
It'll mainly be used as a copier.
I was thinking maybe the HP M1522?
