Question about Brother MFC-3220C Plain Paper Inkjet Fax
What can I do? The fax keeps coming but the machine didn't pick it up.
First thing to check is to make sure all the lines are plugged into the correct slot. After you check and make sure those are ok try and get another fax to be sent to it while you are there and after it rings, press the 'HOOK' button and see if it receives the fax and starts printing. If it does, more than likely the printer is not set to receive properly. If the 'HOOK' button doesn't do anything then the modem in it is bad and has to be replaced. Unfortunately, its not cost effective to replace those. Its cheaper to buy a whole new printer and get the 1 year warranty.

Well... the problem is that you are running two machines on one line. ONE of them has to take predominance. Both machines should have settings for "number of rings to answer at". It sounds like you currently have the fax set to less than the answering machine, so the fax picks up after two rings, while your answering machine might be set to more, which it never gets to, because the fax answered the call already(It doesn't matter if you answer the phone, or the fax picks up, once the line is open, the answering machine is taken out of the equation). Even if you set the answering machine to answer first, you're then taking the fax service out of the loop. I'm not sure how you're going to juggle that, since both types of machines each need control over the line to work properly. That's why we (business machine folk) always recommend a dedicated line for fax service.

If you have an answering machine, have it answer at three rings. Have the fax answer at five rings. Let the answer machine go thru it's cycle, and see if the fax picks up.

on the front display you will see a recieve button and you need to press this and you will see on the display it say either fax...fax/tel.. auto press the button until fax shows thsi means it is only being used as a fax so the line will auto pick up... if you set it to auto it will ring check the line and if it finds its a fax it will put it through as one if not it will ring you phone.. good luck
