When I turn the camera on and look through the viewfinder, it's black. Also, if I flip open the little screen, it is black. It does show the little icons, but it's as if the lens cover is still on (which...

I have the exact same problem.
It started with the recurring "change batteries" problem - which was solved by using non-rechargeable batteries.
Now everything is working fine except there seems to be no light coming through the lense. Everything except reviewing mode is black and all my pictures are completely black. I dont know where the problem is. Could be the ccd. Might take this to the camera shop but im expecting it will cost over $100 to fix... any help?

My Canon S2 IS Powershot camera LCD screen turned black

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras, ESPECIALLY for the S2 IS (you should actually complain to Canon at 1-800-OK-CANON. If it is indeed a sticky shutter, they have been fixing this for free). The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help. Hope this saved you $99.

I have no image in the viewfinder on a canon S2 IS but the lcd display works and it seems to work fine otherwise. What are the likely causes?

There is sometimes a button on digital cameras that turns off the LCD while taking pictures to save battery. Does your camera have a viewfinder? If it does then there might be a button that looks like a little screen or says "disp" or something like that.

Black pictures when using flash

The black images with flash mean that the Iris mechanism in the lens is not working properly, and that needs a professional camera repair service.

Piece of junk that took great pictures for 1 year and now shows a black screen. Do not buy any Canon products. We also have one of these pieces of junk at work, now displays a E 18 code. Appears Canon wants to make mucho dollars by producing ****.
