When a microwave makes a notable HUM there are 3 things thant can cause that dreaded hum.

1. Most common failure is the diode
2. Shorted capacitor
3. The Magnetron

If you list a model number I can probably find your parts for you and pass along a couple of trouble shooting tips if your good with a meter.

HI again Franco. I found your model number. The 2 suspect components are Items 49 and 50 in this link: http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partse...

    The capacitor is here http://www.appliancepartspros.com/part_d...

First of all before you do anything make SURE power is off.

Once you gain access to the capacitor "respect it"... they can still bite! While holding a screwdriver well back on the handle, short across the terminals several times to drain any residual charge. A good capacitor will POP 2 or 3 times. Once you have grounded it then use a meter on R x 1,000 or R x 10,000 and touch the 2 terminals with the 2 test leads. The meter should jump.... reverse the leads and the meter should jump again but both times return to the highest reading. / no resistance.

That brings us to the Diode:

    http://www.appliancepartspros.com/part_d...

More often than not this is the culprit that causes the hum.

Make sure one end of the diode is disconnected and then read across the diode with the meter... reverse the leads and read it again. You should only get a reading in ONE direction. If it is open in both directions the microwave will not work. If it is shorted in both directions the microwave will not work.

That is it pretty much in a nut shell. Just make sure you test components thoroughly before dashing off to the Appliance parts supply or ordering parts on line. Saves you lots of money!!!

No matter what GE is going to make sure that you spend at least $50.00 for one of the 2 parts to get you going again.

Just as a preventive measure I would change item 47 (Fuse) while you in there. The HUM that your hearing has really loaded / shortened the life of your fuse. This is either going to be a 15A or 20A fuse. You can get them mose anywhere they sell fuses. Just match up the numbers.

    Thanks for using FixYa!

Code on the space between oven and microwave

It's normally about 30", but that info will be in either the installation manual or the owner's manual, depending on the brand you choose.

You mention SpaceSaver, that's GE.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

Not heating properly

I have a GE over the range space saver microwave that was only 18 mos. old when it stopped heating. GE replaced the magnetron for us at no charge but since we did not have a service contract - they charged us $200 to install it. It only cost $375 new installed. Your choice.

GE over the range space saver microwave

The first thing to try is a "hard reset". Unplug it from the power line for a few minutes, plug it back in, set the clock, then try again.

Let us know if the hard reset doesn't fix it.
