How to use ipod to watch videos out on tv

I know there is an av cable that you can buy and plug into the tv to watch videos and displays photos from the ipod. This av cable can be bought for both hd tv and regular tvs. I can use this wire to watch videos using old ipods because they have an actual tv out switch which van be toggled on and off in the video settings. so when i turn it on it works on my tv. for the ipod touch however there is no such switch in the video settings. it says tv out but there is not switch like the other ipods. is there any way to turn the tv out on or is there something i am missing?
