This device should be recognized automaticaly by the OS. There are some issues with Windows 7, though.
Make sure you are trying to plug it in a 2. USB port, rather than 1.1. This might cause you trouble (even though this will not be a problem if you have a new computer)
Connect the hub to the external powercord. Sometimes it is not recognized because the hub cannot drain enough energy from the port.
if you are using a desktop pc, make sure it is plugged in the rear usb ports and not at the ones up front.

I just had the same problem and was able to figure our a permanent fix.Judging by the date of you post, I'm guessing you've already remedied this problem one way or another. But just in case you haven't or someone else is having the same problem, I'll go ahead and post what to do. First, make sure you leave the USB hub plugged in right now so that Device Manager lists what it thinks is the Bluetooth device. Go into Control Manager > Hardware & Sound > Device Manager. Right click on Bluetooth device that is showing up in error. From the dropdown box, select Properties. Click the Driver Tab. Click Uninstall. Check "Delete the driver software for this device." Click OK. Unplug your USB hub for a few seconds, then plug it back in. Windows should now recognize it as a "Generic USB hub." You should be good to go. Just remember not to install that update again or try to update the driver for the Generic USB hub. If you do, you'll end up with the same problem. I hope this helps someone out there.
need to check your admin control in your control panel, under the device mang, look for a ! in a yellow triangle under your usb ports if it is there might need to do a driver update and do a MS windows update as well might help with this it is your plug in play settings that are not recognizing it
if Win7-64 is installing this hub as a "Broadcom Bluetooth Device" or some such nonsense, heres a fix that has FINALLY worked for me... START > CONTROL PANEL > HARDWARE AND SOUND > Device Manager. Plug in your hub, and when it pops up under bluetooth radios with an error, right click, then select properties. Under properties, select the DRIVER tab, then select UPDATE DRIVER. It should prompt you to choose between "Search Automatically..." or "Browse my computer..." Choose "Browse my computer for driver software." It should bring up a location box to search, but there should be an option below the box that says "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer." Select this option. This will bring up a list of drivers available. UNCHECK the "Show compatible hardware" box!!!!!!! Then browse until you see (Generic USB Hub). Select the first driver on this list and it will work. The windows generic driver file that works with my hub is in: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\usbhub.sys If the above solution doesn't work, you can try to navigate to this specific driver file during a manual installation. Good luck.
on my computer right click and select properties, then go to the device manager. Under the USB device locate this device and delete and unplug the cable from the computer. Let the computer reboot, and plug the cable into another port if ava. and see what happens.
The hubs usually show up in the hardware list and not as a seperate device. Only way to know it is there is to plug a usb device into it.
I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and devices (though not always)
A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems similar steps may be adapted to suit.
1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability
2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)
3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.
4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.
5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especialy true if you move a HUB to another port
If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further
After installing the USB controller card into a PCI slot inside your computer, connect the 4 port hub to it with the supplied cable. (at the back of the computer)
Do not connect the DVD Recorder to the old usb ports. They will still work, but obviously not 2.0.
Connecting the power supply for the hub is optional, but usually a good idea.
If your computer still doesn't recognize the hub, make sure you have all of the latest windows updates and try running Add New Hardware in control panel. Also, just unplugging the hub and plugging it back in will sometimes work. Use a different port on the controller card if necessary.
As a last resort, you may need to disable the onboard usb controller through your system bios.
