Washer gives off hot smell and won't finish a cycle

Our washer has started stopping mid-cycle and smells hot. After the hot smell goes away (an hour or so) I am able to get it to run again - but often on a different cycle than before. The lid switch is it the timer, transmission, coupling, or ???? Argh. Thank you!

I told my husband it smelled like electronics lab in college. So, I suppose that would be the electronic/dusty option.

  • elmoffat Mar 04, 2008

We'd be aiming to do it ourselves.

  • elmoffat Mar 04, 2008

I have the serial number: CR3116755. There are no #s on the back.

  • elmoffat Mar 04, 2008

I have model # LSB6300PWD and serial # CR3116755. Other than that, I don't see any other numbers, should there be some more?

  • elmoffat Mar 04, 2008

We'll give it a shot, thank you!

you folks inclined to do the work yourselves or do you use service folks?

  • Patrick Michaels
    Patrick Michaels Mar 04, 2008

that smell is usually from a resistor frying, due to a lockup somewhere else, perhaps, or a blown relay. The whole board comes out, as you may have guessed.

ok..then let's find a replacement board, shall we? can you find the s/n or part number(not the model number) on back of unit? may also be on paperwork, but that would be unusual

there are a few more numbers/letters after that 'L' at end, just need to know which ones are yours

  • Patrick Michaels
    Patrick Michaels Mar 04, 2008

ok..after the last L in that model, listed, there will be two more characters...those determine the precise model, and parts required.

How can you get a washer smelling good?

First of all this mainly happens when you use cold water washing, the plastic bowl(s) become slightly porous over time & the dirt from clothes adhere to the area between the inner & outer bowls.

To clean & remove smell.

1. Put washer on hot wash, high level & let it fill with HOT water.

2. Stop washer, put in an old towel.

3. Add a bucket of hot water (This allows the water level to be above the scum mark inside machine.

4. Add washing soda to the bowl (double the amount it says on the packet).

5. Start washer & allow to run to the end of the first wash cycle.

6. Stop washer & allow to sit for a few hours.

7. After the few hours, start washer & allow it to run the rest of the full cycle.

you can do the same procedure with Vinegar.

you may have to repeat procedure a few times.

The worst case scenario, you will have get a technician to remove the inner bowl & manually clean these areas.

It sounds like your leaving the clothes in the washer long after the cycle is finished. Once your clothes smell from the washer they will smell moldy dry.

Inside of washer smells bad!!

Your smell is inside the washer under the cabinet. You must take the cabinet apart and thoroughly clean it. You must have a small leak that has been going on for sometime now for the moister has mildewed. Lysol will kill the smell on this although it must be cleaned first of all

You might want to try adding a jar of "Tang" orange drink to the dishwasher and running it through a wash cycle.

Empty the washer, remove the racks.

Fill the soap dispenser with Tang and put the rest in the bottom of the washer.
Set the washer to run a normal wash cycle and when it is finished it will have cleaned out your dishwasher.
Now depending on how much debris is in the washer, you may have to do it twice.
Worked for me. Good luck.

When i opened my washer it smells like mildew. How do I get the smell gone?  i noticed that my towels smell mildewy also.  Will this go away if i leave the door open all the time?

With the washer empty, put in a cup or two of bleach and then run a complete cycle with HOT water and the HIGHEST water level setting. When the agitation first starts, wait a couple minutes, then turn off the machine and let it soak with the bleachy water for about 20 minutes - then turn it back on and let it finish the cycle. If it's REALLY a strong smell, add some Simple Green, or some other NON-AMMONIA detergent to the bleaching process. (Mixing ammonia and bleach together is a MAJOR no-no. It gives off nerve toxins. Very bad.) If you can't find Simple Green, then add some dishwasher detergent. Not dish soap, like Dawn or Joy, dishWASHER detergent like Cascade or Electrasol.

That should help.

If it doesn't help, then unplug the machine, turn off the water supply, disconnect the hoses, and pull the machine away from the wall. Check UNDER the machine for the problem... If the machine, or the hoses, or the drain have been leaking, the mildew smell may be coming from your floor or walls as they rot... If that's the case, you'll have to find and fix the leak, and then repair your floor and/or walls.

Also, check your dryer vent connection... When your dryer is running, do you get hot, damp air coming out from behind it? If so, the vent pipe connecton may be loose, in which case you probably have a build up of dryer lint behind and under both macines.. This can be a fire hazard (especially if you have a gas dryer) and if combined with a little water from the washer, can start to mildew and smell. Reconnecting the dryer vent correctly and cleaning under both machines may solve the issue.

Hope that helps!

Stopped working mid cycle. The timer still counts down but does not fill, agitate, spin, drain. And before it stopped, the water that was draining out smelled really bad.

The filter on your pump is probably clogged with lint and stuff. You have to remove the bottom front panel, 3 torx screws underneath. The panel will drop and come off. Drain off the excess water from the hose you see. The white filter cover is right in front. Get yourself a bunch of towels or a good big plastic bag to collect water. Unscrew the filter cover and twist the filter out. Clean out all the stuff and put it back in carefully.

Next: You can use Affresh to clean your front loader. Deposits of soap and other such things can be stuck around the inside tub of your washer. Try this product, it works great on all front loaders. Use quite hot water with the Affresh pellet with no clothes and run the machine through a cycle. Also helps with any stagnant water smells. Have you cleaned out your pump lately. Put the pellet inside the machine, not in the soap dispenser.
Pl give me a good rating for the free help, thanks.

Wierd smell from washer

If the machine will run in wash but not in rinse then I would check the motor first. If the motor is getting too hot toward the end of the wash cycle it may very well have a fault in the foward windings. When in the spin mode the motor is reversed so may continue to operate.

Kenmore 44102 has stopped sudsing

Nancy this is a hard one. The first thing I would do is check how hard your water is. The harder the incoming water, the less suds. I believe your model starts with a 417. front loader and I assume that the detergent is being dissolved in the disp. tray. On this model, most of the water will be under the basket while agitating. Now, your drain from the tub has a filter and if it full of lint and debris, it could be restricting the drain, leaving dirty water in the tub. You would have to remove the lower panel and check the tub filter. This is located in the tubing coming down from the tub going to the trap and pump. I will attach a photo for you. You can also run the washer empty with hot water. Add 2 cups of bleach. After it starts agitating, stop it and let it sit for 2 hours. Then resume the wash and let it finish. See if the dirty smell goes away. back
