I think that this is due to the DVD regional codes. I reommend you to check for the regional codes of the DVD. Please check for the "DVD regional codes" in google and try disabling the regional codes. I am sure that, this will help you a lot in resolving the issue.

Check ur software that plays ur disks e.g.media player when first installed needs dvd media to be enabled.sounds to me that software is not enabled or codecs are not installed.if it plays cd's ok there is nothing wrong with ur drive whatsoever its a software issue.theres dvd player software at the hp site free to download includes all codecs and plays most media called windvd.

dont try changing regional area..first off if its a regional problem youre informed of this, more importantly you can only change regional area a few times then ur stuck with last reset;and the only way to resolve is to reflash with firmware or sometimes if ur lucky reinstall os.

Ive watch dvd's purchased from various places and ***** had a regional code issue.you could try a program called any dvd it enables to play any region dvd.

but try codecs first .another progran to try is vlc media player(free) this player will play every file youve ever heard of and a lot you havent.(the only file this doesnt play is damaged files)

if you cant find it I'll send you a copy in email attachment.

I assume it will not play Store bought or rental dvd's.

Try buying a cleaning disc and see if that helps. Other than that the drive would need taken apart and cleaned to see if that fixes it.

It could also be an electronic failure, in which case it would be cheaper to replace the drive.

Hope that helps...

Can't remove dvd drive (hp pavilion dv4000)

I think he meant reinstall the device driver not the actual device. Doing it to the actual device wont accomplish much but take some time. As for the driver go to this website: Click Here

Then download and run the fix it program there
Once you have run it restart the machine
You may have to do it twice before it works

Dvd drive will read/play dvds but will not recognize a cd

go to safemode and try reading CDs in safemode. If your burner still can't read CDs then it's most likely bad. You could get an external usb burner.

HP DV4000 Series not detecting newly installed DVD±RW LightScribe

The type of CD/DVD recorder is suppose to be automatically detected by your Plug N Play portion of your BIOS. Reboot and press the "F" key combination that will bring up the boot process as opposed to the CMOS Settings. See if the correct DVD model shows up as one of your boot electives. You may be able to change it in that window. If not then reboot to BIOS and change it there.

HP dv4000 laptop CD not reading

Hi

Type of media settings might be the issue but making a change for standard CD/DVD recording (it affects reading too) Issue can be resolved. Right click on the CD/DVD drive (Usually D drive ) click on properties and select and choose the recording option. Click the enable CD recording for this drive option

Click on apply and OK. Try again. You may try after reboot the computer. If issue persist please post so we can think about some alternate solutions.

Good Luck
