To drop the ohms you wire in parallel. If your sub has dual 4 ohm coils you would connect both positives from the coils together as well as join the negatives together- this will give you 1 set of positive and negative wires-this + and - is now a 2 ohm load do the same to your other sub and you have a pair of 2 ohm subs. Wire the positives together from both subs as well as the negatives again and you now have a 1 ohm load. If you have dual 2 ohm coils you can get as low as 1/2 ohm of resistance. As far as i know the jl 500 puts the same amount of power into 1.5 through 4 ohms as long as you stay in that range your amp will be fine

I cant get my jl audio w6 10s to give off much bass with the jl audio 500/1 amp

here is a manual for your subwoofers: http://mobile.jlaudio.com/pdfs/8-12W6_BDS.pdf

use the wiring diagram for 1.5? (1.5ohm) with 2 speakers. the diagram for 3 speakers will not work, because it would bring the load down to 1 ohm, and the amp cannot go below 1.5 ohm.

to set up the amp:

under "preamp output section", on the "output mode" switch, select "amp filter"

to set up the levels: start with the amp gain pretty far down- with the input voltage on low for line level outputs from the deck, and on high for speaker outputs from the deck. now turn your cd deck as far up as it will go until it distorts, then turn the cd deck down to just where it stops distorting. now, you can start to turn up the gain on the amp.

on the filters, youll prolly want the cutoff filter around 100hz @ 24db slope. start with the infrasonic filters off, but, if you do get into them, try centering between 30 and 60hz on either, and, possibly dropping the cutoff filter to 80hz.

Amp comes on then shuts down JL 500/1

what do you have hooked up to it? Subs, Speaker, so on. it sounds like it is going into protection because of improper wiring... or it was improperly wired. if it is malfunctioning you need to take it to an authorized JL audio dealer. It's going to cost some cash unless you have a warranty on it and it was installed by a liscensed technician.

Jl amp

If the power supply feeding the amp is OK, it should have blown the fuse well before the voltage dropped to 5v. What size/type fuse do you have in the power wire feeding the amp?

Jl audio 500-5

Assuming that you've confirmed that the speaker is in good working order and that the wiring isn't shorted in any way...

There are separate power supplies for the high and low amplifiers. It's possible that the one for the sub output has failed. If that's the case, the output transistors probably failed and that's what damaged the supply.

Generally, I'm willing to help people repair their amps but this is a large, complex amplifier and it should be repaired by a qualified technician.

500watts sounds about right to me,i wouldnt go any higher as you risk popping the sub and haveing a melt down in the coil section of the subwoofer.
